George Clooney reacts to Donald Trump’s 100% tariff on foreign movies • FRANCE 24 English

Now, also on Monday, Donald Trump upped his tariff war, saying the US will now impose a 100% tariff on films made outside the country. It’s still unclear how those tariffs would operate since movies and TV shows can be transmitted digitally without going through a port like a car or electronics, but the announcement still is making waves in the film industry. Here’s reaction from George Clooney speaking in New York. If it really happens, it would be pretty damaging to the business. Look, he’s not wrong about the idea that businesses have left Los Angeles. They have in droves. What we need is uh you know the the incentives, the tax incentives that you get here in New York, by the way. They’re building studios here because there’s so much work. We need those. And by the way, if he really wants to fix it, then we should talk about a federal incentive uh passed to to keep people working in in Los Angeles because there are tons of below the line people, grips and cinematographers who are losing their jobs because work is going away. Our Los Angeles correspondent Wim Cornet has been keeping a close eye on that story for us. He told us more. Hollywood has uh you know shared its it its worry but also has a quite a good deal of skepticism toward this announcement. You have to know that um the uh international market represents more than 70% of the revenue for the US film sector. And so if this measure were to come into effect and if other countries were to retaliate, for example, which we’ve seen in the past, uh you know, that could cost uh US film studios billions of dollars and thousands of jobs. In 2023, US films represented or generated more than $22 billion in export revenue. And so, as one analyst put it this morning, speaking to another to a US media outlet, said it would be the equivalent of killing of cooking the golden goose. So many in this in the industry right now think this this tariff is unrealistic that it would cut production uh almost to zero and that it would be too difficult to put into effect. But of course with the series of crises that Hollywood has faced over the past few years, the actors and writer strike, the uh drop in in uh in uh movie goers, and then also the rise in streaming, it’s certainly the kind of news that Hollywood would have loved to avoid uh this

President Donald Trump says he will slap a 100% tax on movies made outside the United States — a vague directive aimed at protecting a business that America already dominates. American actor and filmmaker George Clooney reacted to the US president’s decision.

  1. Ah yes, Trump is doing his best to bankrupt America just like one of his casinos. Just look at the government shutdown!

  2. I've been saying this repeatedly, this mad man is suffering from his medicines intake after effects!! That is normal. But it also proves this man is not fit for a responsible public office

  4. As the tech gets better, costs will drop, and we'll see AI actors, and full CGI sets. It wouldn't surprise me if the cost to create these drops by 90% or more. At the same time, jobs will also go, and will be taken almost exclusively by computers.

  5. Imagine rest of the World impose retaliatory tariffs on Hollywood movies then no Hollywood movie ever become Blockbuster

  6. A world without the dollar is an ideal world for everyone else. We should strive to make it happen. Use your own nation's currencies when trading. Dollar is only strong because you still use it.

  7. Come on George! You have to know he isn’t trying to “fix”. It. He’s trying to skim a bit off the top of every piece of business the country does. Like a mobster wanting his cut, and definitely not above threatening the people he doesn’t feel is giving him his do either.
