Greece confirmed something rather unexpected recently: the country’s first genetically proven wolf-dog hybrid, discovered not far from Thessaloniki.
According to DNA analysis conducted by one of the country’s leading wildlife organizations, Callisto, the animal carries roughly 45% wolf genes and 55% dog genes. It’s the first time such a case has been verified in Greece, and for wildlife experts, it’s a small but significant milestone.
The finding emerged from a study that analyzed genetic samples from 50 wolves across Greece. This time, scientists relied on DNA testing instead of physical characteristics, which often led to not-so-accurate results.

Greece’s wolves are making a comeback as they have been climbing steadily since the nationwide hunting ban back in 1983.
A six-year study by Callisto, a Thessaloniki-based conservation group, estimates there are now about 2,075 wolves roaming the country. That figure includes at least three known packs, with no fewer than 31 animals, in the Mount Parnitha region near Athens.
Experts say the recovery of their numbers is mostly a result of habitat regeneration and reduced hunting pressure. Wolves are showing up again in areas where they hadn’t been seen for decades, including parts of Attica, for example, and even stretches of the Peloponnese in southern Greece.
But the resurgence hasn’t been without complications. Recently, a young wolf reportedly attacked a five-year-old girl in Neos Marmaras, Halkidiki. The incident shocked locals and reignited discussions on how to manage wolves in regions where their territory overlaps with people’s daily lives. Callisto has been working to track down the animal, though encounters like this remain extremely rare.
Interestingly, while it’s long been believed that dogs evolved from wolves that grew tame by scavenging near early human settlements, newer research paints a slightly different picture. Some scientists now think humans may have taken in wolf pups thousands of years ago, raising and breeding them until, over generations, they evolved into the dogs we know today.
For conservationists, identifying hybrids through DNA is a key step in protecting pure wolf populations. When wolves and dogs interbreed, their offspring can pass domestic genes back into the wild population, which over time could weaken the species’ genetic integrity and their overall ability to survive in the wild. Since these hybrids can reproduce, the challenge is very real, and it makes managing wild wolf populations more difficult.
In Greece, wolves are legally protected, but the appearance of hybrids makes the situation more complex. The debate is especially heated in mountainous regions, where human-wolf encounters are increasing.
That’s why the latest DNA testing techniques, the same ones used in this Thessaloniki case, are becoming so important. They give conservationists the tools to tell wolves, dogs, and hybrids apart with confidence, and to create wildlife policies that balance protection with public safety.

Nonetheless, there have been reported cases of wolf attacks on people, albeit rare. The last one was in 2017 near Kastoria, when a woman was attacked whilst feeding her sheep.
