  1. Who’d want to enter politics????

Every facet of your life is forensically investigated.

Not returning a double payment of rent was pure disgusting. I hope that tenant didn’t pay the following months rent.

Edit: poster above explained what happened…..pretty scummy what he did.

  2. The story here is that JG rented out an apartment in Blackhall Smithfield to a couple from 2007-2009 and for 6 months after these tenants moved out, due to an error with a standing order they continued to pay rent to JG totaling €3.3K (€550pm). Tenant had to go to great lengths to get a refund and JG was uncontactable, but eventually through going through his work, parents and the bank they managed to get in contact *’The tenant says that, when he got Gavin on the phone, he was told the money would be refunded, but this never happened. He also says maintenance of the property was slow to happen, and he got the impression that Gavin was stretched financially.’* . JG is claiming having no recollection of this. The tenancy was also not registered with the RTB, which the article makes sure to note that a lot of tenancies at the time were not. Tax was paid on the rental income.

    EDIT: There was NO refund

  3. But the biased mainstream media only write about Connolly?

  4. Ah he used be a landlord,

Can see why the government picked him now

  5. Fick me, this election is tedious.. next week, we’ll hear about the time he never rewound the extra-vision tape.

  6. None of the three proposed candidates are president worthy. Very hard to replace michael D but we have to have some better candidates to these three!! The system is wrong

  7. Something doesn’t sound right

Fair enough Jim didn’t refund them for a period of time but he still did

But they kept on paying for a period of time also. They should have stopped it.

    Both to blame.

  8. The media in this country are an absolute joke. They don’t know how to cover this election except through the veil of scandal. Every single candidate has had stories blown out of proportion by a swotty cohort eager for airtime.

  9. i thought Micheal Martin was ok by his saying that JG would be the perfect president, now my opinion of him has gone drastically low!

  10. This is just part of the media smear campaign against Connolly…………oh wait its about Gavin

  11. Not like a FF politician to have hazy memories of financial dealings.

  12. I don’t see this damaging him at all tbh. FF are the party of landlords their voters won’t be bothered by this

  13. Remember he is just like us & and is in tune with the young people /s

  14. “Jim and Jennifer Gavin celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary next Tuesday. In the middle of his presidential election campaign, their first family home together has now cropped up. When the Gavins moved on from Blackhall Square, they kept the apartment to rent out.

The north inner-city apartment has since been occupied by a number of tenants, including a couple who rented the property from 2007 to 2009. The tenant was paying his rent by standing orders from his current and savings account each month.

The couple were saving for a house themselves, hence the second bank account.

When the tenants moved out in May 2009, the standing order from the current account was cancelled. But a banking error resulted in rent continuing to be paid into Gavin’s account by a standing order from the savings account for six months until November 2009. When the error was spotted, the tenant sought to get a refund of the inadvertently paid rent. Finding it difficult to get hold of Gavin, the tenant persisted by phone, email and personal contact.

“When I moved out of your apartment, due to a mix up with the bank, rent continued to be paid into your account by a standing order from a saving account I have with AIB,” he wrote in December 2009. “After I moved out of the apartment at the beginning of May, a total of €550 continued to be paid into your account until November when I realised the error. This means I paid you a total of €3,300 in error.”

The tenant asked Gavin to acknowledge the mistake and refund him the money. “I would like you to contact me by phone or in writing to arrange for this money to be repaid to me,” he said. “I am writing to you in work because I have been unable to reach you by phone, despite repeated attempts. Your home address was never included on the original lease, so I was not able to write to you at your home address.

“I also asked the bank to contact you by phone, but you did not respond to them.”

The tenant claimed that, when he did not get a response, he went to Gavin’s parents’ house to seek to contact him. He got a mobile number for his former landlord. He also contacted the Residential Tenancies Board to try and get Gavin’s home address from them, but they had no record of the tenancy.

The tenant says that, when he got Gavin on the phone, he was told the money would be refunded, but this never happened. He also says maintenance of the property was slow to happen, and he got the impression that Gavin was stretched financially.

Gavin says he does not remember any issue over a rent refund. “In relation to the tenant, he does not have any recollection or records of any such dispute, and they have reviewed all the records they have from 16 years ago,” a statement says.

But the candidate does admit his tenancy was not officially registered, as was required under the law.”

  15. This man could command a dressing room of athletes, drive them forward and make them feel they could run through a brick wall to secure the win. Really, this is the same man?

He is zero charisma! I wonder who the real Jim Gavin is. They must be something about him but all we see is a gaffe prone bumbling candidate. He clearly has leadership and command skills based on his record but where are they?

  16. The only good thing I can say about him as a candidate is that he’s better than McGregor and in a hypothetical face off between them scenario, I’d hold my nose and give him a vote.

    And that’s it.

I’m surprised no journos have dug into his air corps history.

  17. It’s amazing that the three that are up for the election are our only choices, I don’t want to miss the vote but I genuinely couldn’t vote for any of these people.
