It was challenging but went surprisingly well, revised for about a week prior, if anyone needs advice I picked up some great tips on the hazard side of things so feel free to DM me

  1. Congratulations. I am in the same position but haven’t pushed myself to start learning yet, was in a car accident as a teen and didn’t want to get behind the wheel.

  2. Heh. When I did mine about 5 years ago, mid-COVID, I got 44 on hazard perception. One lower and I’d have failed. The multiple choice questions were fine – I think I got the same as you, 49/50.

I find hazard perception much easier in real life than I do/did looking at it on a computer screen. It just made no sense to me. In real life it’s fine.

Congrats for passing! Now for the practical… my instructor used to tell me just treat it like you’re chauffeuring the examiner around. As smooth and calm as you can be. With extra emphasis on mirror checks etc.

I did most of my learning after I passed, like most people I think.

  3. Congrats! I didn’t learn until 26 because of nerves and did have a cry on a lesson once (not my finest memory) but I’ve been driving with my own car over 2 years, it’s such a weight off to know that even if I choose to take public transport, if something goes wrong or my plans change I can simply decide to go anyway, and have plenty of frequent places I simply would never have considered going when it was all trains and buses

  4. Congrats on passing. It’s been a few years since I did mine, but I remember laughing at how absurd some of the questions were. One from my test went like this:

You are stopped at a zebra crossing as an elderly couple begin to cross. What do you do?

    A. Rev your engine because they are holding you up.

    B. Accelerate sharply and swerve around them.

    C. Beep your horn to make them hurry up

    D. Allow them to cross in their own time and proceed when safe to do so.

  5. Well done – I’m in my mid 30s after starting at 17, passing my theory/had loads of lessons and a long story and series of circumstances led to me giving up.

Passed my theory a year ago and have been doing all of the local driving with my SO as supervisor building up to doing my test. I was a nervous wreck and had several panic attacks at the wheel in the first week or two but have managed to get to a point where I’m feeling really confident.

Even done a few 2 hour roundtrips on unfamiliar roads, its a very liberating feeling. It’s always been a source of embarassment that I’m always ‘that guy who cant drive’ in work, social circles etc.

Curiously I know quite a few people who don’t drive in their 30s and it seems to be almost entirely men, always wondered if there’s a reason for that. I work in education and it does seem like all of the girls are extremely eager to get driving ASAP.

  6. I absolutely hated the hazard perception, I had the (apparently quite common) problem of being too early.

There’s a junction coming up obscured by a bush? Yep, hazard, click!

NOPE! Clicked too early 🤦‍♂️ Supposed to click when you see a car, not the potential for a hazard 🤦‍♂️ 0 points for you!

  7. Massive congrats! The hazard perception part is definitely its own unique beast compared to real-world driving. I also found that treating the practical like you’re just giving a calm, safe ride to a passenger was the best mindset. It’s awesome that you’re pushing through after all this time, that’s seriously inspiring.

  8. I will also be taking a driving test at some point, there is this very charitable guy that does the full course for just £1100 that I’ll be taking in the near future once I’m set, congratulations on your pass!

  9. It’s not an achievement to pass this first time. But it is room for ridicule if you don’t .

  10. I started learning to drive when I was 17, but thanks to going to uni, having no money, dropping out of uni, having even less money and then deciding that I couldn’t afford a car anyway, I didn’t pass until I was 35 (I’m 41 now).

I kept resitting the theory test and letting it expire, so I think I must have sat it at least seven times. I passed my practical on my fifth attempt.

Thanks to a huge cock-up in bookings I arrived for that fifth test and there was no examiner waiting for me. I had taken the day off work and was not happy. My instructor spent ages trying to sort out what happened and he kicked off that his schedule had been thrown out of whack.

He made such a fuss that I got booked in for the following day with the chief examiner for Manchester. She was very friendly, but you could tell that she just wanted to be rid of me and my instructor. I’m pretty sure that I would have had to drive through a group of school kids to fail that test.

  11. Excellent! Well done for overcoming your accident. Driving brings so much freedom – enjoy the open road when the time comes 😊.

  12. Congratulations!

When I done my theory I got 2/10 on the double hazard 😂
