  1. What a man. You see videos like this and you realise how brilliant he was in his thinking.

  2. If Northern Ireland had just him and David Ervine, we’d have a very different place right now

  3. A huge hero of mine, yeah, you can’t eat a flag – but these days there are bloody maniacs all around in different countries trying to force them down our throats

  4. Are you challenging me to a Brewster’s millions flag edition?

  5. He’s a legend in my eyes, as an Irish republican. And people waving the Palestinian flag, without any thought of nuance or the bigger picture, should reflect on his words. Same story.

  6. I will always upvote John Hume posts

The greatest Irishman of my lifetime and its not even close

  7. TIL the Nationalist Party continued until 1977.

I thought he was referring to Sinn Fein and I was confused so had to look it up. Nope, it’s the IPP that continued on in the north after partition.

  8. Problem is, lots of the gobshite flag shaggers lacked a good father figure growing up.

  9. Thanks for the post. There was rarely anything uttered by this man that didn’t provide food for thought. It’s a shame that thinking is so last century, anorexic brains everywhere now.

  10. If he had lived I reckon he’d have eventually became president of Ireland.

  11. I’ve had a fair few arguments with people about the flag thing ( with the tricolour I mean) and it’s really surprised me how so many people are vehemently pro-flag no matter what. This clip is the best response really. A truly great man.

  12. Christ what a man he was.

It’s someone like him who should be president

  13. A truly great man. Willing to sacrifice for peace.

Everyone today runs him into the dirt but most of them don’t remember what it was like.

  14. Absolute Legend,

Truth like this is what the world needs right now.. sad loss

  15. The opposite side of that is – perhaps if Irish people had been running the place for ourselves rather than the country being being gutted by colonialism, our economic system would have been in better shape? You can’t eat a flag, but the flag that flies over your government buildings may well take the food off your plate….

  16. My absolute favourite Irishman. Derry has produced some greats.

  17. An absolute gentleman and a politician as a politician should be. Some of today’s politicians, not just here, but the world over, could do with taking a leaf out of his book on how to conduct themselves in politics. A man of the people, for the people.
