I live in Lexington, Kentucky and have a big friend group in Trosterud, Lørenskog, and Oppegård. The few times they've been here are some of the only connections I can think of my state having to the lovely nation of Norway and I've continually looked back in the history books trying to find any Norwegian presences in Kentucky, of which there are very few.
One of the more historically significant, however, was finding that Hans Christian Heg, from Lier, fought at Perryville battlefield in 1862; though not at the exact spot of this picture (this was taken a few miles north from where I spotted his division on the map).
I took my friend from Lørenskog there in 2023, figuring we were making history by having the first full-blooded Norwegian in around 160 years to set foot there (prove me wrong, I cannot think of any Norwegians who have gone out of there way to go visit the backwater that is Perryville, Kentucky).
Anyway, I just have latched on to this historical fact and am entranced by it because as I said, there are so few connections my state has to my favorite country, unlike the northern states of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and North Dakota, for example. I feel honored to have brought my friend there.
