The decreasing trend of the total electricity consumption in Belgium is also apparent in its neighboring countries. With the exception of the Netherlands, total load decreased in 2023 in all observed countries. This decrease started in 2021, after all countries had a short increase of electricity demand following the record-low levels in 2020, following the Covid-19 pandemic and resulting confinement measures. The evolution of electricity demand in selected countries, indexed against their 2015 values, is shown in Figure 1-4.

  1. yet somehow what we spend is more and the companies who sell it are making record profits from what i heard

  2. Deindustrialising the continent and moving production offshore to save the climate and ruin small businesses who can’t afford it. Just ask your local warm bakery how much they spend on electricity and gas 🙂

  3. Pretty sure it’s related to energy hungry industry decreasing/stopping their activities and the relatively big increase of solar and batteries.

Industries consume a about 50% of electricity produced in Belgium while for households it’s less than 25%.

  4. I thought we were supposed to electrify our industry to combat climate change, pushing people to use electricity instead of burning fossil fuels. But apparently we are using less electricity? I don’t understand.

  5. Total load, what does that mean? Is installed PV power for instance also calculated? Because we did install massive amounts of PV, so this graph could mean electricity consumption is still rising but total installed capacity is growing a lot more each year.

  6. I’m not sure what to make of this.

On the one hand, does this mean our grid is prepared to handle an increased electricity demand?

Or is it a sign of deindustrialisation and a sign that we are lagging behind in the electrification of everything to phase out fossil fuels?

    Or is it both?

  7. So when fluvius says “the electrification of vehicles is a problem. The current infrastructure will not be able to handle all this power”… they are actually lying? It’s going down? Wtf
