  1. The authorities of the unrecognized region of Transnistria have declared a “gas conservation” regime due to disruptions in the republic’s gas supply. According to the head of the regional Ministry of Economic Development, Sergei Obolonik, the restrictions will remain in force for at least a week and a half. The problems with the gas supply of Transnistria, which was left without Russian fuel after the cessation of gas transit from Russia through

The halt in Moscow’s funding for Transnistrian gas comes a few days after pro-Russian parties lost the elections in the Republic of Moldova.

“After this period, all consumers and needs in Transnistria will be supplied with gas normally. I mean industrial and commercial consumers, as well as operations in the thermal energy sector, in the order established for the start of the heating season,” the official assured . He stated that no power outages are expected due to gas problems.

According to Obolonik, there were “gaps in the financial flow of assistance” due to “a rather complex implementation mechanism and a large number of participants.” In late January, the Transnistrian authorities  reached an agreement  with Chisinau on gas supplies to the unrecognized republic worth about 3 million cubic meters per day. Tiraspol is making the purchases using a loan provided by Moscow.

Russian gas supplies to Transnistria and Moldova were halted on January 1 due to the cessation of transit through Ukraine and a dispute between Moldovagaz and Gazprom over a $709 million debt. This led to   an energy crisis in the unrecognized republic. Heating, hot water, and electricity began to be regularly cut off in the region. Authorities urged local residents to strictly conserve electricity and use alternative sources of energy and heating.

Gazprom supplied Transnistria with 2 billion cubic meters of gas annually (approximately 5.7 million cubic meters per day). This amount was sufficient for domestic consumption and electricity production at GRES Moldavskaya, part of which was supplied to Chisinau. With the onset of the gas crisis, supplies to Moldova were interrupted, forcing it to buy electricity from Romania at a higher price.

  2. The time is perfect for them to start negotiating a peaceful reintegration into Moldova.

  3. It’s so funny to me how blatantly obvious it is that these „independent“ countries are just an extension of Russia and are, in practice, less independent than an Oblast in Russia.

I doubt that Russia will stop sending gas for the entirety of this winter but let’s say they would. If that happened, Transnistria would have two options:

    1. Beg Moldova on their knees to annex them back.

    2. Let the government go completely bankrupt to such an extent that the government ceases to exist and you get anarchy in Transnistria.

  4. I guess they need to focus on other shipwrecks

  5. “This toy is boring. I’m not playing with it anymore.”
