Random fun fact: When the USSR dissolved, there were many treaties and agreements that had to be either terminated or transferred. Many of those agreements with the USSR were transferred to Russia. For example, the United Nations membership was considered “state continuity” and Russia took over the USSR’s permanent seat. For the nuclear arms control treaties, Russia was also the state continuity. The West really didn’t want to renegotiate all those arms control treaties.
But for the Olympics, Russia did not continue with the USSR and instead started a new NOC…and thus the reset.
Does this include the medals of both the BRD and the DDR or only the medals of western Germany?
It has a certain retro charm.
Really striking just how little* the USSR was around for
*and at the same time peaceful enough to participate in the Olympics
Fun fact due to the boycott of the 1980 Moscow Olympics Great Britain is the only country to have won a gold medal at every summer Olympics (and one of only six to have been every summer games)
Since we (that is, the US) have about 3-5 times the population of Great Britain, Germany, Italy, and so on, this is not so impressive. — The more so since our population has grown much more over the past 60-70 years than theirs has.
In short, I’d like to see this per capita.
I’d like to see this +China, +present day Russia if that is even possible
