A vessel carrying refugees and migrants was found by authorities in distress early Sunday morning, approximately 3.3 nautical miles east of Plomari, in southern Lesvos resulting in one confirmed fatality.
The body of a woman was recovered and transported to the port of Plomari, while seventeen people have been rescued so far.
Search and rescue operations are continuing in the area, involving vessels and a helicopter from the Hellenic Coast Guard and Frontex, the European border and coast guard agency.
