Thieves in Belgium are increasingly targeting the batteries on electric bicycles, which are generally easier to steal than the bike itself and can be worth between €500 and €1,100.
At this point, it might be necessary to spend around €80/year on bike theft insurance from Ethias (are there other companies that offer bike insurance? Idk honestly).
Honestly, in certain places I just remove the battery and take it with me for safety. But it is admittedly quite heavy and I wouldn’t expect for example an elderly person to do this. I guess you might also be able to invest in a secondary bike cover lock for some models of bike.
Buy a step, take it with you
The solution to this problem is simple.
Just cover your battery with dog poo.
Not just the battery either.
I have an ebike, which I took in Brussels one day. It’s Brussels after all, and I’m paranoid, so I took the battery with me inside. The bike itself still has two U-locks and a frame lock to protect itself.
It’s one of those ebikes with the battery under the baggage carrier, on the back. Handy for me, quick to take out, can be locked with a key, very nice.
But if I take the battery away, there still remains a small block, into which the battery plugs. Not the engine, no, just some plug block. It’s held by four screws, difficult to reach, on the underside of the whole thing. You’d need one of these fancy curved screwdrivers and a lot of work to remove them.
And yet, by mystery, three screws were missing when I came back. Thank god they didn’t start by cutting the cables, I suppose.
