Asda, Tesco, Morrisons and Iceland are shutting UK supermarkets with a full list of the branches impacted announced. Asda, one of the UK’s largest supermarkets, is set to swing the door shut on a store, while Tesco is also shuttering sites.
Morrisons is also shutting a swathe of outlets, too. “The challenge for High Streets is that things like banks, pubs and chemists give people a reason to visit on a regular basis,” said Kien Tan, senior retail adviser at PwC.
“But there’s also been a long-term shift in doing many things online, so there’s less need for physical locations. And when we do go out, we want to go maybe to somewhere more convenient like a retail park, where we can drive and do all our shopping in one go,” he added.

Asda
Asda closed its Stepney Green store permanently in September 2025 due to a significant rent increase from the landlord, and the company is currently consulting with colleagues on further potential redundancies as it continues to address losses and implement a turnaround strategy. While some of the 2024 news regarding the supermarket’s financial struggles and a takeover by TDR Capital is outdated, 2025 has seen a continued sales slump and IT issues, contributing to the ongoing difficulties and strategic changes at the company.
Tesco
A Tesco Express store is set to permanently close within weeks, the supermarket chain has confirmed. The Tesco store on Shirley Road in Southampton could be shutting, with staff allegedly telling customers that it would be closing within weeks.
A Tesco spokesperson told the Echo: “We have taken the difficult decision to close our Southampton Shirley Road Express later this year. The store will be open as normal until then, and we continue to serve the local area through a number of other nearby stores.”
Iceland
Iceland have announced they will be closing some of their stores later this year in the latest blow to the UK high street.
This comes after the supermarket giant announced they would be cutting 3,000 jobs in 2025, as well as closing their remaining cafés, patisserie and pizza counters.
Iceland have already shut several stores including branches at Shenley Road, Borehamwood, Alphington Road Retail Park, Exeter and the Welling branch in London.
