An increasing number of Americans are growing wary of investing in the U.S. market amid financial anxiety, persistent inflation, high interest rates, political volatility, and economic uncertainty. With over half the population now living paycheck to paycheck, saving has become more challenging than ever. Meanwhile, affluent Americans are increasingly seeking to diversify their portfolios by investing abroad.

Portugal has long been a popular choice with many Americans, due to its economic stability, appealing lifestyle, and the opportunity to gain residency or citizenship through its Golden Visa program. However, in late 2023, the country ended the popular real estate investment route to the Golden Visa following local backlash over soaring housing costs.

Today, Portugal’s revamped Golden Visa program offers affluent Americans an exclusive opportunity to invest in the country through a specialized private equity fund, the first of its kind to allow portfolio diversification, aligning with the investment style many U.S. investors favor at home.

Private Equity Fund Offers Portugal Golden Visa Exclusively to Wealthy Americans

Portugal’s existing Golden Residence Permit Program grants a five-year residency permit to non-EU citizens who invest a minimum of €250,000 ($291,900). The program allows EU travel and requires minimal stays, with seven days annually for the first two years and a total of 21 days over the next three. Eligibility for the program is determined through capital investment or starting a business.

While the exclusive private equity fund offering the Golden Visa has recently been approved by Portuguese regulators, the video above highlights the existing Golden Visa program in Portugal, also known as the Golden Residence Permit Program.

Capital Investment can be (excluding real estate):

€500,000 ($587,000) — Business investment

€500,000 ($587,000) — research activities

€250,000 ($294,000) — artistic production

Once a minor presence, Americans now lead all nationalities applying for Portugal’s Golden Visa. Forbes reports Lisbon-based Vida Capital saw U.S. interest surge 571% in early 2025 versus 2024. Despite being the largest demographic in Portugal’s Golden Visa program, affluent American investors found the program fell somewhat short of meeting their specific investment needs.

Exclusive Private Equity Fund For U.S. investors Seeking Portugal’s Golden Visa

Portugal, a scenic and affordable, often underrated destination, now offers an exclusive Golden Visa aimed at wealthy Americans seeking residency. Regulators approved the newly launched LXL Ventures Fund, specifically designed for U.S. investors, which caters to the surge of affluent Americans seeking to diversify their investments abroad amid rising economic uncertainty.

“Americans love Portugal, but they want to invest in ways that feel familiar,” John McNertney, a former Merrill Lynch wealth manager now based in Lisbon and overseeing more than $100 million in assets for American clients in Portugal, told Newsweek. “While golden visa funds have certain limitations, we’ve structured this one to align as closely as possible with the style of portfolios they know and trust,” he added.

Seeking portfolio diversification through Portugal’s Golden Visa program, Americans favor investment funds that spread across multiple sectors, a familiar strategy they employ at home. According to Zeev Fisher, a Lisbon-based international tax lawyer involved in the LXL Ventures project:

“We’ve been working with multiple funds in Portugal, but what we’ve realized is that even though Americans have become the biggest demographic that is looking for golden visa fund investments, none of the funds are offering a solution that’s really tailored for what Americans need,” Fisher said in an interview with Newsweek.

The LXL Ventures Fund offers a portfolio split as follows:

40 percent in the U.S. market

35 percent in the Portuguese market leaders

25 percent in Portuguese innovation or technology.

Why This Fund Is Great For A Golden Visa To Portugal

For Americans seeking to diversify their investments globally, managing investments and taxes across borders can be a complex process. The LXL Ventures Private Equity Fund streamlines this process by offering a Golden Visa investment option with built-in tax advantages, designed exclusively for affluent U.S. investors, creating a compelling argument for both profit and potential dual citizenship in Portugal.

Safety

Besides the beneficial tax selections, Portugal is widely regarded as a very safe country for tourists and residents, ranking as the 7th safest country in the world in the 2025 Global Peace Index (GPI). Violent crime is very low. In the interview with Newsweek, Fisher noted that many of their American clients cite politics as the primary reason for their relocation.

“So many talk about safety, about wanting a more peaceful, quieter life, about wanting to live in a more tolerant place,” he added. “We definitely see no slowdown. People keep coming, and they are very, very good, very quality people. It’s not people that are coming to take, it’s people that are coming to give.”

Being home to many affordable places to retire, life in Portugal is also comfortable with a pleasant climate, an affordable cost of living compared to other Western European countries, and a rich cultural heritage. The country boasts a high quality of life, a relaxed pace, and excellent public transportation.
