UN calls for Taliban to restore internet as Afghanistan goes dark • FRANCE 24 English

Cut off from the world. For more than 24 hours, Afghans have been unable to get online or even call their loved ones. And it seems there are no exceptions. It’s a challenge for people since all the government sectors, universities, and schools use the internet. It’s hard for people to live without it. In recent weeks, internet connection in Afghanistan had been extremely slow. It was cut in phases on Monday with the final stage affecting telephone services. We have online classes. The internet shutdown has created a lot of problems for us. We’re asking the government to reconnect the internet. Why the Taliban has made this move is still unclear. In the past, they have voiced concerns about online pornography, but many say this is a ploy to further restrict the Afghan people. rather conservative regimes see the internet as a means of you know liberating women which in their uh in their books is a really bad thing. Um but then also they see it as people accessing all all sorts of different information on the internet which they would rather people not see. We were we were laughing but inside we are very safe. Family members overseas are desperate. At Afghani stores in Paris, they gather trying to connect with loved ones and comfort one another. No reply. They have nothing. You see, no one have contact with the family. It’s close. You know what happen is there? We don’t know nothing. The UN is urging the Taliban to restore all internet and phone services.

The United Nations called on Afghanistan’s Taliban authorities Tuesday to immediately restore internet and telecommunications in the country, 24 hours after a nationwide blackout was imposed. The government began shutting down high-speed internet connections to some provinces earlier this month to prevent “immorality”, on the orders of shadowy supreme leader Hibatullah Akhundzada. FRANCE 24’s Charlotte Lam reports.

  1. Afghanistan still hosts ALL of terrorist organizations: ISIS-K, Al Qaida, TTP, and BLA… it is still a super dangerous country and I AM MUSLIM SAYING THIS

  2. I'm also in favor of shutting off the electricity. If it's medieval, then do it properly. No more money or support for the Taliban.

  3. Are these guys in stone age..That's why illiterates should not govern a country..Look at USA..what's happening

  4. They have the right to do things if they have too ,like trying to stop spying in Afghanistan or coming bad information to our young people.
