Best generational trauma: still upset about Great Wrath of 1714-1721… those Russians will pay one day…
the papist fears the protestant lion
From Germany to Russia, the Swedes were feared across all of Europe.
In the mid-17th century they invaded the highly developed dutchy of Courland-Semigallia (modern Latvia) and burned down/looted any manufacturing that they could find, leaving the state in ruins. Also heard the atrocities they committed in Poland at the time were extremely devastating.
I hate it that the swedes are getting all the credit again even though we did at least half of the work
There is still reason to fear us. We will always be Viking.
You have a saying in Germany as well, learned it while working with Germans, “alter Schwede”. Which I think refers to the 30 year old war, because the Swedes were so nice, but I’m not sure 🙂
The Poles mentions Sweden in their national anthem, also because of the good old times when we visited them.
In our history classes (90s anyway) we breeze through that part like it wasn’t anything in particular, other than we were great at war and had some holdings overseas.
The trick is having a large wall and paying them to fuck off and pillage someone else.
Well, at least, Svens still scare their kids with Croats. So, say danke, Hans.
There’s plenty of old military marches in Finland about thirty years war. Part of Sweden back then you know, and especially cavalry was mostly finnish.
For example, Porilaisten marssi, official march of the president of the republic, lyrics goes:
*Sons of a people who have shed their blood*
*On the plains of Narva, on the sands of Poland,*
*On the fields of Leipzig, on the hills of Lützen,*
*The might of Finland has not yet perished,*
*It can still stain the battlefield red with the enemy’s blood.*
And yes this song is played in christmass when *christmass peace* is declared on tv.
Or Finnish cavalry march:
*In the snowfields of the North lies our fatherland,*
*Our hearts have glowed with faith and honor;*
*Our steed was watered in the flow of the Neva,*
*It crossed Poland’s Vistula with fearless strength,*
*It bore our avenging sword to the Rhine,*
*And from the Danube it drank the Emperor’s wine.*
Experiences may differ, particularly in Poland
That war wiped out 40% of the population. Understandable it left its mark for generations.
Our grandparents did the same, but with roma people
Maybe she means the modern Swedes

hanses grandmother is polish confirmed
To us it’s either the Turks (because of berber pirates enslaving whole cities along the coast) or the Germans (because he sadistically committed plenty of war crimes on whole cities along the mountains).
Now that the Turks have moved to Germany maybe the only safe place are the plains.

My German grandma was always going on about how the Gypsies would get me if I didn’t behave. Never heard her say a word about Swedes.
Maybe she had some Polish in her. We killed between 25-35% of the Polish population due to war and the famine we caused during The Deluge.
In Italy the equivalent is “Mamma li turchi!”, coming from the frequent raids of the muslim pirates on the coasts that plagued us until the late 1700s (basically until the French started beating them in Algeria).
