If Victorian industrial Britain didn’t do it, other than the vague idea of class solidarity by Marx & Engles
And interwar depression and postwar restructuring didn’t do it…
Thermo nuclear holocaust is likely the only trigger than would make the UK revolt
The Tories are still voted in by the lambs
Culture wars are deliberate. Divide & conquer, as the saying goes; it’s very effective.
Lol Solidarity?
Britain is the most divisive placed I’ve ever lived. It won’t happen in our lifetime.
Everyone hates everyone. And while a considerable percentage of the population are alcoholic football hooligans that care more about season tickets and teaching their four year old racist chants than they do improving their quality of life in a way that doesn’t come with a handout it’s not likely to change.
My plan involves putting myself in a position to move overseas.
I really wonder which country is the example of solidarity that Britain should follow:
– the split in half US where republicans and democrats don’t even live in the same neighborhood anymore?
– France equally split between extremist left, extremist right and central void full of grandeur…
– the misogynistic and omophobic Southern and Eastern European countries…
– China? India?
I guess there are some good examples of cohesion among the Nordic countries, maybe also Canada…but in general this country is in a much better shape than this article seems to suggest
Mad isn’t it.
We are about to reach a stage that people will not be able to afford to live.
Not afford a house, or annual foreign holidays ot two cars but not afford to live.
This seems to be new territory. Well not new. We are going backwards and backwards. Working our collective arses off to pay every penny we earn back to the banks, the corporations, and the government. Leaving us with nothing except a truly horrible “quality” of life and a deep, profound sense of anxiety, fear and worry. This is not how to live!
But. We accept it. We all accept it. And I think we will to continue to accept it.
HL Mencken wrote that “Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard.”
We are getting it good hard. And it’s all our fault.
We might never see it. Look at countries where the people have been robbed- Venezuela, Russia, Argentina, Brazil.
When did they have solidarity and band together to improve things?
They didn’t, it just got worse and worse.
Solidarity requires solidarity with *all* of your fellow proles. Yes even them, TERF newspaper. Solidarity means Black Lives Matter. Solidarity means Trans Rights Are Human Rights. Solidarity means no one left behind.
That could happen, if people stopped automatically snidely insinuating that people are either a tory voter or a labour voter based on a difference of opinion on one single topic (this particular sub being the worst for that, along with reddit as a whole).
This tribal bullshit needs to be put away with first, I’ve been downvoted into oblivion here just for saying that I wouldn’t vote for any of the main parties. People cling onto political affiliation like religion.
The police aren’t on our side, the government isn’t on our side, the law makers aren’t on our side. We’re protesting to deaf years. We need to bring in French protestors to hold our hands and show us how it’s done.
I used to ask myself this, I don’t think it will ever happen, people are too busy chasing mortgages and the whole “I’m Alright Jack” mentality is what is normal now after multiple generations of capitalist and top down rule.
I saw posters out supporting Tories the other day, and have seen relatively young people campaigning for them. When ever anyone strikes there’s people attacking them, people have said it should be illegal for nurses to strike. People say campaigners protesting in the roads should be run over, beaten up or hung. There’s no solidarity in this country and never will be.
I don’t think we will see solidarity in any country. I don’t think things getting bad leads to solidarity.
I think the author is wrong, there is solidarity. To reveal it would require a political figurehead to go forth and preach.
I believe the Guardian would come out against such a thing as they did in the recent past.
Would this mean terfs and other feminists playing nice?
If a plague killing 100000s of Brits and ruining the long term health of millions more isn’t enough to motivate people to a) tolerate the discomfort of a little bit of fabric on their face to keep others safe b) treat nurses and doctors kindly,
If the tories get voted in 5 times in a row despite destroying the NHS, destroying the hopes of the young to have decent paying jobs, houses, families,
If the tories sit on 43% vote share even while passing laws to literally take bread from the mouths of starving British schoolchildren,
then I can’t imagine what it will take before we see solidarity in British society.

EDIT: to avoid the above comment being misinterpreted again by mistake – above, when I wrote ‘discomfort’ and ‘little bit of fabric’, I was talking about those who experience trivial ‘discomfort’ wearing a mask. I am not talking about people who experience ‘trauma’ wearing a mask, or those who are for some other health reason truly unable to wear a mask.
Solidary? How long have you been in the UK? Does what goes on look like people want solidarity?
No, they want culture war, envy driven politics, othering etc. They want to put other people down to feel better. There is no solidarity I can see.
Much, much worse. The media are doing too goo a job of diiding us with fear tactics.
Never gonna happen. I feel classism is just too ingrained into this country. Even within the working class we sort each other based on profession and look down on people we see as beneath us, even if we’re all being paid the same minimum wage
All the different groups have to want the same or very similar outcomes before that will happen.
The UK was able to subjugate a lot of world due to divide and rule. They were so good at it as they had perfected it in Thier own country since 1066.
The culture wars and even Brexit are all ongoing examples of the Divide and rule policy in place today.
There was a glimmer of hope post war as the NHS and welfare system was brought in to help the common person,. But the Tories have been trying to set that straight in an attempt to take us back to a Victorian levels of social care.
Why would solidarity emerge? That’s not necessarily a given.
Hasn’t the Guardian been working hard for a long time to sow division and hatred of anyone who its writers decide are ‘on the other side’?
Sorry.
But I’ll never side with anyone who voted for brexit. Rather watch them slowly drown while I casually eat a M&S sandwich.
