It’s heartening to see AI being used for something so significant. Naming a perpetrator helps restore the dignity of the victims and shows that truth can still be uncovered, even after so many years.
> Matthäus was, until this spring, head of the research department of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington DC, where he had worked since 1994.
I wonder what an expert in the field of fascist ideology and the Holocaust could have as motivation for relocating from the USA.
On one hand, it’s a great use of AI provided that the individual can be identified beyond reasonable doubt. On the other hand, it’s far too late to probably matter. WWII ended 80 yrs ago and any perpetrator would be +100 yrs by now.
Might be of better use to utilise that tool in more recent conflicts. Maybe bring, still living war criminals to justice.
At this point, who gives a shit?
How does this AI work exactly?
If it’s guessing what a high resolution picture of someone’s face might look like, that’s a dangerous precedent.
How? How AI did this?

You do not need an AI do see current holocaust
90% of it was the good old fashioned way, lots of research, narrowing people, places and units down, finding out a name etc -ai was just used for some minor photo age progression and basic photo matching.
The headline is of course, bullshit.
“Historian barely used AI, mostly relied on a bunch of other techniques but the article that is being reposted here was made by a group that is now funded by an AI group and the amount of AI related stories from this news agency has spiked since then, ripping things out of proportion”.
