By various estimates, Ireland needs between 200,000 and 500,000 additional housing units immediately. The shortage of housing has driven prices to astounding levels that are now beyond the reach of most working class people.
Ireland has vast areas of unused land, unlike places such as Hong Kong, so there is no logical reason why more housing can’t be easily constructed at reasonable cost. The underlying problem is anti-development laws, regulations, and activists have made new development extremely difficult.
The crisis is not going to solve itself. If the situation does not improve, then we will have tent cities of homeless people constructed in cemeteries and public parks.
