In terms of sheer damage of policies to both Germany and Europe long term, I’m not sure if there has been a worse political leader who actually had significant power in European history, at least in the last 30-40 years.
Merkel was naive for thinking the Russians would not start a war if they did trade with Europa.

* enabling mass-illegal immigration while kicking out qualified legal immigrants in return,
* over tax benefits and loopholes for the rich,
* while completely disregarding the maintenance of public infrastructure,
* kickstarting the country-wide housing crisis (again, in favor of the rich which large real estate portfolios),
* and decay of the education system,
* to canceling atomic energy in favor over a massive over-reliance on Russian gas, which even today, she cannot admit was a mistake.
Now we see she would even blame Poland and Baltic States for Russia’s expansionist invasion, rather than admitting to having made a mistake by handing Russia so much leverage.
