A Sinn Féin MP has said his party "will not be intimidated" after a viable explosive device was found outside his party's constituency office in Newry city centre.
The pipe bomb-type device was left at the office shared by Newry and Armagh MP Dáire Hughes and Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins in Monaghan Street.
Army ammunition technical officers (ATO) made the device safe and it has been taken away for further examination.
A police cordon has been removed.
Hughes described it as an attack on democracy and a "disgraceful and cowardly act designed to endanger lives and cause major disruption".
"To those behind this attack, Sinn Féin will not be intimidated," he said, in a statement.
"We will continue to represent the community without fear or hesitation.
"Our immediate focus is the safety of local residents, our staff, and all who live and work in the area."
The PSNI said they received a report of a suspicious object in Monaghan Street on Sunday night, shortly before midnight.
ATO examined the object and it was "declared a viable explosive device", the PSNI added.
The area was cordoned off overnight but the road has been reopened.
A PSNI inspector said: "We're grateful this morning to local people for their patience while we worked to make the area safe."
Police appealed to anyone who has dash-cam or CCTV footage from the area to contact detectives in Newry.

It’s about time the psni started doing their jobs and actively arresting known members of loyalist paramilitaries
The fact we still have to deal with this shite in 2025 is shocking
Loyalists still doing this shite in 2025, what a surprise
Another attack on democracy from thugs who can’t handle progress. This is clearly about the Irish language signs at Grand Central if Kimmons was the target. Cowardly and pathetic, attacking democracy and endangering lives because they can’t cope with equality.
>Hughes described it as an attack on democracy
He’s some neck on him. 😂
Who’s behind it though?
That party seems to be the focus of a considerable ire from a number of “legacy” contingents within their own “community”.
Wasn’t a dissident plot foiled in 2020 involving the current Northern SF leader and a (former IRA member, convicted murderer and former SF MLA) colleague?
Then there was another incident in 2023 on the falls road, dissidents spray painting a threatening message on a gable wall adjacent to a SF party office..
Then there was that bonfire in the north West a month or so ago – dissident adjacent types burning the name(s) of SF party members..
So (potentially)..
That same slavering fanaticism they stoked, strutted on, and (in the estimations of some observers) “muscled” their way into power is now coming back to bite them on the backside…?
Would be nice if the PSNI actually did their fucking job and tackled the growing menace of loyalist terrorism. But no no, I’m sure some pensioner with a placard in London is a more pressing matter. Can’t be arresting your mates in the UDA I guess, would make the Orange Order meetings a tad awkward.
It is wild that by merely writing 4 words I could be arrested and charged with a terror offence but there are people well known to be in paramilitary orgs that go about their day and have to be resentenced on the rare occasion when they are arrested because the first time was legally ruled as unjustifiably lenient.

Just posting Larissa’s latest frothing ramblings for the enjoyment of everyone who it has blocked. (Or, at least, one iteration of it: who knows what it might say now after all the edits it goes through?)
Bless!
I’ll assume this is from the uvf/uda response to the Irish language. Unionists need to get their attack dogs in line and the police need to arrest/jail them as they know extactly who they are.
All the piss heads on here blaming loyalists lol…….newry is 99% nationalist, it is either a false flag operation or replublican dissidents or people mad at SF voting to make Newry a santury city
