No its not the start of some awful Dad joke 🙂 I am visiting the UK and found myself in Evesham for the weekend and saw all these posters for a "Mop Fair" in the town. Now what better souvenir to take back to the flatlands than a selection of mops for your family, I thought ….

Turns out, well … no mops 🙂 But rather a hiring fair turned fun fair …. so I learned a new phrase in English this weekend.

Anyway I'm having a splendid time in Evesham, a town picked out on the YouTube channel T***towns as the worst in the county – which I find a little unfair to be honest, everyone is really nice here in the shops and restaurants, in the way that Brits so often are just lovely 🙂 And then there is the old Abbey and churches (pictured) which are beautiful!

Also I had a very fine lunch out at The Fleece Inn in Bretforton – which if you asked me to imagine a perfect, old English country pub, that would be it. Its a National Trust owned place and they have witch circles around the fireplace to stop witches coming down the chimney for a pint (which seems a little like discrimination to me …but what do I know ….)

  1. Listen mate, you can’t come over here with your lovely outlook and pleasant manners. We have traditions to honour.

  2. If you still here next weekend, come to the Mop Fair at Alcester, just a few miles north-east of Evesham, a town with so much character the BBC are currently filming a new TV series in it.

  3. Never thought I’d see Evesham on here! My wife and I moved here a few years ago and really enjoy living here, despite the challenges it (and a lot of similar towns have).

We also got married at The Fleece Inn, an incredible day and amazing place to get married.

  4. I love me a good mop. Nice combination, currently, of a vileada supermop and bucket, and one of their steam ones, with the triangular head.

Honestly, I love mopping, but these just take it to another level. Little bit of flash all purpose and my floors come up a treat. Nothing more satisfying, except possibly a good session with the Vax and our living room carpets.

  5. Well I’ve learned a new phrase and I’ve been here all my life.

Never heard of a Mop Fair until now.

    Glad you’re enjoying your trip.

  6. Mops in Tewkesbury 9th and 10th this week. Should be good as usual.

  7. It’s our local Mop Fair tonight. I didn’t consider the history, it’s just something that is just there each year.

  8. Visiting the Netherlands was the most fun I’ve had abroad maybe ever. Everyone was immensely friendly, it was safe, clean… I was seriously considering applying for a visa off the back of a long weekend, lol. Anyway, just to say I’m really pleased to see that you’ve had a lovely experience here in return. I hope we’ve treated you well and you come again soon!

  9. Nou, ook een nieuwe zin voor mij, en trouwens ben ik Brits! Veel plezier!

  10. I live outside Evesham in a town called pershore, we don’t talk about Evesham in such pleasant terms and try to avoid it as much as possible.

Glad you had a lovely time. When I was younger the mop fair was always fun in the daytime but nighttime would always bring trouble, especially for pershore teenagers against Evesham teenagers.

  11. The Mop always had a bit of a reputation when i went to school in Evesham. The Fleece, on the other hand, is an iconic pub – up there as one of my favourite ever pubs.

  12. Tewkesbury is advertising a mop fair next week as well.

…what is a mop fair? Is it different to a regular funfair?

  13. It’s wild how much local history is hidden in plain sight like that. Glad you’re having a great time and proving those “worst town” lists wrong.

  14. I am from nearby and I think the term ‘Mop’ is pretty rare in this context elsewhere in the country.
