All this talk of nuclear weapons reminds me of the film ‘Threads’ from 1984.

Part documentary, part public information film.
Definitely one of those films that will disturb your sleep for a few nights.

I watched this when I was 14 and was horrified, scarier than any horror film that I had seen at the point. Well worth a watch but fuck is it right misery watch.
I’m still scarred from this.
Is this the one where it shows a woman eating washing powder? I feel like that’s burned into my head.
Also “When the Wind Blows” that scarred me for a few years.
Watched this as a kid and it has never been topped by any horror movie since.
I don’t know if it’s just how I’m wired but I don’t think I could ever watch that film. I read a synopsis and watched a couple of YouTube clips a few weeks ago and no joke I felt sick to my stomach for about a week.
It’s only let down by it’s budget/bad special effects but is otherwise perfect.
I have to wonder what it would look like of it were remastered.
Threads was very good. Iffy special effects but the coldness of the timeline in the movie made it very effective.
If it was redone today with modern fx it would be superb. Although it would drive many to the pits of despair mind you.
Now is not the time to be letting people know about this film.
Ending of the film is brutal: it says “you think humanity will recover? Well then, fuck you, here’s a mutant still born”. The shot of the steel mesh as she gives birth sums it up, the post WW3 war is a brutal, barbaric and cold one. The last moment of light comedy is the guy who jumps up off the toilet after dropping the bomb and the proverbial bomb drops, nice touch or synchronicity there. After this it’s a direct ride straight down into hell. Hospital scene with the wailing, amputations and staircase smeared in blood, pus and shit is the worst for me. Anyone thinking a nuclear war is survivable or worth it if it only affects some regions needs to watch it. I’m a hardcore horror fan and this film is harder than some of the worst. It shows hell on earth but the really nihilistic, suck the air out of the room version.
The Russians can’t even beat the Ukrainians, with all of their supposed might, the paper tiger description appears to be true, NATO and the Americans can’t think that Russia are still a real threat (without nukes), China are a much more serious nation but they have practically no war experience, they’re only good at suppressing their own people
There’s two types of people in this world. Those who have seen Threads and those who have not. How I wish I could be one of the latter
Well that was cheerful, thanks for the link. Rewatching this makes me think it was quite optimistic, no cannibalism, plants recover kind of, no problems with teeth in short no chance.
Bought it on Blu Ray in 2020 for some reason. Still haven’t watched it.
Great film
