Irish reunification vote ‘within decade,’ suggests Sinn Fein

  1. >Mary Lou McDonald **asked** for all-Ireland citizens assembly to discuss the idea

Which is fair enough, but that will bring lots of ‘small issues’ to the surface that will need to be dealt with first, possibly by (local by-)law changes.
Those will be ‘tabled’ in this election cycle but only ‘acted’ on after the next election (to give the parties time to declare their stance and win voters), and *if* the pro-issue votes outnumber then during the election cycle after that they maybe are able to start implementing things.

*I’d rather chair a committee to decide on the colour of the bicycle shed.*

  2. Probably a little optimistic but not by much, I’d say. My guess is that the exact timing will depend on how quickly [Ireland’s Sláintecare plan](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sl%C3%A1intecare), overhauling the health service to something approaching the universal health care that the people of Northern Ireland are used to from the NHS, is completed. Right now, it’s difficult to say whether it’s on target or even what the final target currently is. Last I heard, it was estimated to be completed around 2030, but that was before COVID so who knows anymore.

I sincerely doubt whether the Northern Irish people will vote for reunification without assurance that their healthcare costs will remain roughly the same or better.

  3. It’s bound to happen anyway even if they don’t come out top in the next elections. The only way it doesn’t is if the UK government suddenly morphs into China or Russia and prevents all independence referendums in NI Scotland Falkland Islands Gibraltar etc.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again if these nationalists really want independence from the UK then they need to push on allowing England its own independence referendum as the English won’t waste it like Scotland did. Thankfully Westminster isn’t so stupid as to give England the independence vote and stupidly break up the union in the name of misguided nationalism.

  4. How are Scottish people now with their independence?

Looks how in a decade from UK will only left England and Wales. Back to the middle ages.
