Wholesale distributor Makro Spain has inaugurated its first distribution centre in Tenerife, investing over €7 million as it reinforces support for the HoReCa sector in the Canary Islands

Located in La Laguna, the Makro Tenerife distribution centre is its first in the Canary Islands and the second in Spain.

This achievement is part of Makro‘s broader logistics network transformation plan in Spain, targeting 45% of sales through distribution and future investment in other regions.

Distribution Centre

The new facility, spanning 3,000 square metres with six loading docks, can distribute up to 900 orders per day for the island’s hospitality business.

It relies on electric trucks to minimise environmental impact and ensure direct deliveries to hospitality businesses.

Its multi-temperature space can store over 1,800 pallets of diverse dry, refrigerated, frozen, and ultra-fresh foods, as well as approximately 1,500 items that represent 80% of the most frequently requested products by Makro customers.

In line with its objective to reduce energy consumption, the Tenerife distribution centre features state-of-the-art refrigeration facilities that are free of fluorinated gases, optimising its performance.

José Manuel Ramos, regional director of Makro Canarias, stated, “Currently, 20% of our Tenerife customers use our hospitality distribution service, receiving their orders in less than 24 hours. With the launch of this centre, we want this channel to grow 18% on the island within a year.”

Looking ahead to 2030, the company aims to achieve €3 billion in turnover, with its hospitality distribution service accounting for 45% of its sales.

Logistics Platforms

Currently, the company utilises various logistics platforms to support its hospitality distribution service, including two national platforms in Quer (Guadalajara) and Getafe (Madrid), as well as two multi-temperature regional platforms in El Prat de Llobregat (Barcelona) and Galdácano (Vizcaya). Makro plans to further expand this network with a third regional platform in Andalusia.

In addition, the company operates distribution centres in Leganés (Madrid) and La Laguna (Tenerife) and is working to transform its stores into multi-channel centres capable of handling orders from the hospitality distribution service in areas without a distribution centre.

The store in Telde (Gran Canaria) is already operating under this format, with stores in A Coruña, Alcalá de Guadaíra (Seville), Bormujos (Seville), Murcia, Elche (Alicante), and Albuixech (Valencia) soon to follow.

In areas without centres but where deliveries are made to the hospitality industry, Makro has enhanced its last-mile distribution with two transit points in Vigo and Almería.

In its last fiscal year, Makro purchased €41 million worth of products from nearly one hundred local suppliers, contributing to its development and stimulating the economy of the Canary Islands.
