WANA (Oct 07) – The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has expressed appreciation for Iran’s long-standing efforts in hosting and providing services to Afghan migrants.
In a meeting with Seyed Mohammad Bathaie, Iran’s Deputy Interior Minister and Head of the Social Affairs Organization, IOM Senior Adviser Kim Elling praised Tehran’s role in supporting Afghan nationals. The meeting took place in Geneva on the sidelines of the 76th annual session of the UNHCR Executive Committee.
Elling highlighted the declining contributions from donor countries as a major challenge for the UN system in sustaining ongoing projects, stressing the importance of continued international support.
Bathaie, for his part, underlined that “despite unilateral and unjust sanctions, the Islamic Republic of Iran has, over several decades, provided significant services to Afghan refugees.” He called on donor countries to shoulder their share of responsibility by allocating adequate resources to projects currently underway in Iran.
During his trip to Geneva, Bathaie also delivered a speech at the UNHCR Executive Committee’s plenary session and held meetings with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and the Secretary-General’s representative on disaster risk reduction.
