Victoria Coleman, a former Air Force chief scientist, has been appointed by UC Berkeley to take the helm of the Berkeley Space Center, a research and innovation hub planned for the NASA Ames Research Center at Moffett Field in Mountain View.

Coleman will begin this month as both associate provost for the research center and as a professor of electrical engineering and computer sciences at UC Berkeley. She was previously a visiting professor.

Most recently, Coleman was the head of the innovation center for Airbus in Silicon Valley.

The Berkeley Space Center will be built on 36 acres leased from NASA. The research facility will house research space for companies interested in working with UC Berkeley and NASA scientists and engineers, according to a press release from the university.

Coleman’s 40 years of experience in government, industry and academia will help bring the campus’s vision for the center to fruition, said Mark Asta, interim dean of engineering and leader of the search committee.

“She has a history of building coalitions across academia, private industry and government agencies,” said Asta, professor of materials science and engineering. “We’re looking for the next director to expand those coalitions to advance the air and space center. The ability to bring people together towards a common vision is one of her strengths.”

Coleman succeeds Alex Bayen, whose team spent nearly five years bringing partners together to launch the initiative.
