As of last night in the hospital where I work it’s currently a 2 day wait in A&E for a bed. So not a good time to fall down the stairs and break your hip, not unless you fancy 48 hours on a trolley in a corridor.
It’s incredible how backwards the UK has gone these last 12 years.
NHS being starved by the Tories so that they can point a finger at it and say it’s not working, and get it replaced by private health insurance and more money for them and their chums.
I mean it can’t be a surprise, covid stats say on average 450 people are dying a day currently, hospitals are probably rammed with people so no real surprise there are long delays.
Not helping that people are using A&E as General Practice Guy in our A&E waited for 8 hours to be told he had trapped wind. Our A&E was opened in 1985 since then 1000’s and 1000’s of new build houses have arrived. Same size A&E.
The biggest issue is the fact that the health system and the social care system aren’t integrated whatsoever.
Guarantee that a large portion of folk aren’t getting into beds because OAPs who can’t schedule with their carer to be at home or be able to pick them up are being kept in longer as a result because the hospital has duty of care.
It will be interesting to see the stats on reasons why people are in A&E, because I think this is one of the key reasons why its overrun, people don’t use it for its intended purpose.
Last time I was there with a broken ankle, there was a woman with about 5 children and a baby in her arms crying very very loudly the whole time, demanding to be seen to anyone in a hospital uniform.
She ended up next to me in the assessment room, one of her kids (not the baby) had a small splinter in their foot..
A malicious government is the problem. Each hospital needs more funding and there needs to be more hospitals. There needs to be more GPs and they need to provide more Out of Hours availability to enable A&E to be for the more serious cases. Mental Health teams need more funding so they can provide care that limits the dependency on A&E. Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary Services all need more funding, more staff and more capacity.
The government waste huge amounts of money through Privatisation and their increases to budget barely match inflation while the pressure of more patients outstrips it. Departments can’t get approval to hire extra staff but they can get approval to use the Private Sector to catch up on lists where the Private Staff get paid 3x as much as the NHS staff so it costs a huge amount to do a weekend.
Our local A&E (Bedford) is fantastic. Knocked off my motorbike, it was around the corner from A&E so I was helped by two lovely chaps into A&E dropped off and seen to and discharged in 1hr 20mins.
I took my youngest daughter there last week, and we got seen in 20 minutes in an “urgent care” facility that had only 1 person waiting in front of us.
Now my GP on the other hand, well I can’t even get an appointment in the next 5 weeks …
My 92 year old grandad, who went to A&E with a stroke last week, spent 18 hours waiting for a hospital bed, wasn’t offered any food or drink, and wasn’t attended to with regards to needing the toilet and so ended up wetting himself. Luckily it seems to have been a mild stroke and he’s back at home now, but my family are absolutely furious.
