CHICAGO (CNN) – The battle continues between the city of Chicago and the Trump administration.
On Tuesday, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson called on an Illinois judge to halt what he called President Donald Trump’s “illegal” move to deploy the National Guard.
“They won’t have policing powers. We know that they can’t arrest,” Johnson said. “So, whatever their order is, I believe this is what the judge is asking for. Make the case first and then what would be the specific assignments? The president has not proven either of those standards, and this is why you know I’m going to remain hopeful that the judge carries out what the judge did in Oregon, which this is unconstitutional. It’s illegal and it’s dangerous.”
Johnson says once the president invokes his authority to federalize the National Guard, troops will no longer answer to the state.
“I am a mayor, but I’m also a Christian. I pray for Donald Trump. His soul. He’s lost, and that’s why it’s important that we help find a way to protect our democracy and our humanity,” Johnson added. “That’s what I’m motivated by; not some brittle, insecure human being who has expressed a degree of lawlessness that would make Vladimir Putin blush.”

Johnson’s response comes after the state of Illinois and the city of Chicago filed a lawsuit against the trump administration on Monday.
The suit argues the administration has not met the legal conditions required to federalize National Guard troops.
