TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – The Ottawa County and Lucas County emergency management agencies announced that they will be switching to the Integrated Public Alert and Warning System for alerting the public in case of an emergency at the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station. Because of the change, there will be a test of the system on Oct. 10.
According to a press release from the Ottawa County EMA, the test of the IPAWS will take place at noon on Oct. 10. IPAWS will send a wireless emergency alert to mobile devices within 10 miles of Davis-Besse.
“We are committed to keeping our communities safe and informed,” said Fred Petersen, director of Ottawa County EMA. “IPAWS allows us to reach residents quickly and effectively, ensuring they have the information needed to respond during an emergency.”
According to the press release, FEMA and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission both approved the transition. The Ottawa County EMA said the new alert system enhances public safety by using modern technology to deliver timely and reliable emergency alerts to mobile devices, radios and televisions.
