HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) – Cutting hair, but never cutting corners.
A Hattiesburg barber has opened a new barbershop that he hopes will be a stepping stone for aspiring barbers and stylists.
“I’m committed to creating a safe, professional environment where fellow barbers and stylists can come work and grow their clientele completely for free,” said Joshua Hayes, Main Appearance Barbershop’s owner.
Hayes says Main Appearance was founded because he saw a need.
“The impact that I’m hoping to leave is to always help fellow barbers and stylists to never forget why they started the journey,” he said. ” Always hold on to the passion of why they’re doing what they’re doing and never forget those in need. Because if we all support each other, we all grow strong as a community.”
Hayes announced recently that he is looking for barbers and hairstylists to fill every seat in his shop, free of charge.
There is also a space for nail technicians.
Hayes says by eliminating booth rent, entrepreneurs looking for their big break will have a chance to focus on their craft and what comes next.
He says he remembers when he couldn’t always afford to pay the weekly fee required at many barbershops.
“Looking back on my journey, I’m grateful for every setback, hardship, and letdown. Because without those, I wouldn’t be here today,” Hayes said. “I’m grateful for those moments because it shaped me to the man I became today. And I learned through the journey to only depend on God, not man. “
Hayes said now that he is in a position to help others, he hopes to lead by example.
He hopes to instill values of professionalism, responsibility, and a love for the Hub City.
“ I don’t want people to lose hope or the passion for what they’re doing. And the reason why I became a shop owner is because I want to be able to create opportunities for others. It’s not about the financial gain,” Hayes said. “It’s about creating a future for fellow barbers and stylists.”
Hayes says he is planning a food drive and toy giveaway ahead of the holiday season.
Anyone interested in filling a seat can inquire on Main Appearance’s social media, here.
Main Appearance will be officially open to everyone in November.
