And soon they can do it, without risking Germany losing gas.
For Ukraine, Jamal pipeline was like an emergency break.
If Russia would try something like an invasion, they could cut it, and I can promise you the rest of Europe would react FAST to secure the peace.
(And get the gas flowing again ofc)
Now, when NS2 is nearly operational, nobody in Europe would freeze if Ukraine was invaded. It would be unnoticeable on a personal level.
This scenario incentivized everyone, even Russia to keep a minimum level of stability in Ukraine.
However I still don’t think Russia would full on invade. It’s a too risky and costly endeavor, for marginal propaganda gains. They might nibble on parts at the max.
Bold of the US to assume the EU actually cares what happens to Ukraine
Refugees, gas supplies, military threat. I guess Russia is seizing on the opportunity (winter + record gas prices in Europe) to apply maximum pressure on Germany to get clearance for Nord stream 2 (and further isolate Ukraine)?
> Kremlin’s spokesperson has openly stated that quick regulatory approval of Nord Stream 2 and its operation would reduce gas prices — the pressure is barely covert. Particularly given that even without Nord Stream 2, there is more available gas transport capacity from Russia to Europe than could ever be needed.
> Europe has previously experienced gas crises in 2009 and 2014. And both times, Russia limited gas supplies to politically pressure Ukraine, putting European economies at significant risk.
Russia and Ukraine are heading towards a major war.
And Germany will be there to apologize for it, urge appeasement, and continue to deepen dependency on their Russian friends
We shouldn’t get manipulated by this kind of things Russia has nothing to win with taking all over Ukraine the small parts they occupate are already an enormous economic burden never trust this kind of statements the US has also an political agenda
Thos might be the best thing to happen to EU in years.

Oh yes, they never lied before…
Well yes, they have been very subtle about that
They already did in 2014.

External threat tends to unify people.
