WASHINGTON (TNND) — Arrests continue nationwide as the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement strategy draws both protest and praise.

A New York Times Siena poll, conducted Sept. 22 to 27, 2025, reveals that while most Americans support deporting immigrants living illegally in the United States, they also believe President Donald Trump’s actions have gone too far.

Protests have erupted, particularly over the use of the National Guard in cities like Chicago, which critics call unlawful and unnecessary.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson criticized the deployment, saying, “Armed masked men showing up with Black Hawk helicopters, sticking guns in the faces of black women, zip tying black children, putting immigrants in one van, putting black folks in another van. This is not what builds safety.”

Despite legal challenges, the White House remains committed to its approach, sharing photos of arrests, including gang members, as well as child sex offenders and convicted murderers.

“If we have to do it the hard way in Portland and Chicago, we will,” said Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem during a Cabinet meeting Thursday.

She added that they are expanding operations in Chicago.

“We’re purchasing more buildings in Chicago to operate out of. We’re not going to back off; in fact, we’re doubling down. We’re gonna be in more parts of Chicago in response to the people there,” she said.

Legal arguments over the National Guard’s deployment have unfolded in Illinois and Oregon. A lawyer representing the state of Oregon described the president’s assessment of Portland as “untethered from reality,” while an attorney for the federal government labeled protesters as “violent,” warning of increased violence if the Guard withdraws.
