De taksen in Nederland op tabak zijn recent verhoogd met als doel meer inkomsten. Was een beetje tegengevallen want Nederlanders gingen massaal over de grens hun tabak halen met als resultaat dat de inkomsten op tabak zelfs waren gedaald.
It is also impossible to enforce a stricter limit, France tried that (they wanted to limit tobacco imports via land from other EU countries to 200 cigarettes instead of 800) and they were defeated in court by a law student as it goes against EU regulations. France does have high prices but it is such a big country that it is way more effective than in Belgium.
The most effective solution is the one they mentioned.
Edit: curious to see why the downvotes are there. Raising prices too much does not work here, Belgium is a part of Schengen and is too small of a country for this to be effective as people can cross the borders very easily.
Also, this is what is already happening in NL. A transport company makes money just by transporting passengers all the way from Alkmaar to Luxembourg and Germany, also because cigarettes are cheaper. If no solution is found this is what will happen here.

Onlangs in Luxemburg gestopt voor tabak. Ik vermoed dat MR in dezelfde ellenlange rij heeft staan aanschuiven.
Maakt niet uit van waar je gaat maar als je voor 150 euro sigaretten koopt in Luxemburg heb je met de winst de naft van u traject terug betaald zelfs als je aan de kust woont.

The reasoning actually makes sense and I’m not a fan of MR. As they mention in the article, half of Belgium’s population lives within 50 kilometres from a border so it’s very easy to go abroad for groceries and the like and spend money earned in Belgium in another country. I’m in Brussels and I’ve already heard of people here, in La Louviére and Namur driving all the way to France or Luxembourg as tobacco (in France it’s e-cig liquid) is significantly cheaper… And that’s more than 50 kilometres. Decreasing the VAT as they mention would technically lead to an increase in tax revenue for Belgium.
