Sadiq Khan claims diverse London is reason for American tourism surge

  1. Surely tourists go somewhere for the history of the place …. Or for the beaches.
When has any tourist, anywhere, gone somewhere because of diversity?

  2. Americans are travelling all over Europe. I was in the algarve recently and came across a tonne of them when previously I wouldn’t have seen any.

Can only assume it’s down to cheaper fares/more routes with the likes of United.

I don’t think it’s anything to do with diversity. People don’t choose their holidays on that basis.

  3. Khan is well known for encouraging rich Americans to visit London and spend their dollars to boost the economy. He especially loves a visit from the President of the USA and always puts out the red carpet.

  4. The increase in the amount of Americans in London is nothing on Edinburgh. It’s mad how many there are now.

  5. I’d like to see the actual tourism numbers because there’s a bit of manipulation going on comparing American tourists here to 2022 and British tourists in America to pre-covid times

  6. Lots of skeptics in here, but if you arrive on the African American side of TikTok there are a plethora of videos where they discuss how comfortable they felt in London. Many videos discussing how London is more diverse than NYC, as in their view people of different cultures mix more here. They also remark on how many interracial couples you see in the U.K., in contrast to the US.

It’s certainly a selling point for some ethnic minorities. A lot of you may not realise that when researching places to travel to, one of the first things a lot of POCs type into Google/social media is ‘CITY NAME racism’. For example, at the moment a lot of Indians are experiencing intense racism in places like Canada and Thailand, and will be looking for countries and cities that they will be more comfortable visiting.

Sadiq can talk out of his arse sometimes but I don’t think he’s wrong on this.

  7. LOL. Speaking as an American, any ‘surge’ in tourism from Americans is most likely due to promotional airfares – nothing more complicated than good deals making it easier to travel.

All else equal, for Americans the UK is a favored destination as we like Brits/Britain, it scratches the ‘look at all the old history we don’t have’ itch, and we don’t have to stress about dusting off rusty high school French or Spanish lessons.

  8. It’s because Europe is cheap for well off Americans

And US is increasingly expensive for Europeans, hence the reduction in tourists going the other way (perhaps trump may have some affect on that one, but pretty sure money is the main factor)

  9. They come for the history, the royal family, Big Ben, buckingham palace, abbey road, Shakespeare, architecture….they don’t come for the food and they don’t even really know about the diversity. They’re surprised when it’s not all white British people

  10. Some people in this thread are being far too earnest.

It’s a meaningless soundbite and Khan knows it. Americans are coming here because they want to escape their own country for a little bit, English is understood, flights are plentiful and they can almost locate it on a map without any help from anyone else.

Khan is simply saying, in a little bit of a puff piece, that Americans are coming to a place where all the things the current American political class appears to hate are embraced.

  11. Surge in tourism is because UK economy is weaker by the day compared to Americans that make this trip more affordable for them.

It was less than 15 years ago that the UK £ was 2x USD

  12. The standard? oh, in that case I am sure *nothing* was taken out of context /s

  13. As an American Londoner, lol. That soon might become part of why Americans choose to live here, but that’s not really why we’d visit. We have NYC, LA, Miami or Houston for diversity.

  14. Americans coming to the UK has absolutely nothing to do with a diverse society, 😂😂

  15. Americans heading to London because they’ve never seen people of colour in America.

  16. “I never realised how diverse London is” – several Americans I’ve met on “vacation” in London.

Interpret the above how you want, but it would be fair to say their ignorance of the fact would suggest that diversity was not the factor that brought them on holiday here.

  17. Good, good, all the Americans are welcome, have fun here and please spend profusely, even get the train out of London and spend profusely there too

  18. Ohhh Sadiq, one day you’ll just learn to be quiet, you’re doing some good things just learn to shut up once in a while.

  19. London or GB is a less ‘European’ shock for the Americans. Lingo is one of them.

  20. I can’t move in Hounslow for groups of American tourists trying to snap up bargains in shoezone
