The light of the Imagine Peace Tower on Viðey Island was illuminated at 8 p.m. yesterday evening, on the birthday of John Lennon, the husband of Yoko Ono.
The Peace Tower is the brainchild of the artist, musician, and peace activist Yoko Ono and is intended as a beacon for world peace.
However, the event marking the lighting of the Peace Tower was canceled due to heavy seas and high waves in Faxaflói Bay. Traditionally, a peaceful ceremony has been held to honor the memory of musician John Lennon when the tower is lit.
Safety considerations first
The whale watching company Elding, which operates ferry trips to Viðey, said that conditions were unfavorable for sailing across the bay and therefore canceled all ferry trips for the day.
The decision was made with safety as the primary concern, in consultation with emergency responders and event organizers.
The lighting of the tower could still be viewed via a live stream on the Imagine Peace Tower website.
