France unveils ‘old-new’ government: Ministers returning, others keeping their posts
Well, as you say, it’s not a radically new government. Indeed, 11 ministers are returning to the exact same positions uh they’ve been holding uh since the beginning of the France Beeru uh government. Um as you mentioned, uh Bruno Lumare, he’s not been in he wasn’t in the last government. He’s coming back to serve now as minister for defense. Rulon Lusclure is new blood. He’s not served um as a senior minister up until now. Uh but he is from Emanuel Muon’s uh political formation. So as you can see uh the changes that have happened aren’t necessarily radical changes in policy or don’t herald radical changes in policy. You’ve also got Eric Ver uh to joining the government from the Republican party. And indeed, the Republicans have pushed quite hard um to strengthen their hand to have more seats at the table in this new government than they had in the last one. Uh they realized sometime last week that they might be being taken for granted uh by the Mronist camp and that they wanted to force to have a strong presence if they were going to be uh one of the parliamentary forces propping up this government. uh regardless as you say uh not a radical change uh and that’s something that Seb Luk knew the prime minister admitted immediately after the announcement he said the lineup resembles and brings together the base of this government’s support in in the national assembly as such it’s not a surprise he said what’s new though is that they have accepted these positions knowing that they will be forced to find compromise and consensus as they he is of course taken off the the kahonta 49.3 article of the constitution for his government. He said they won’t be using it and that’s been a lifeline for successive French government since 2023. It’s how they’ve pushed through a number of pieces of key legislation without a majority. His government though will be forced to find absolute majorities in favor of any piece of legislation they push through. He said that is where there has been a break with his predecessors in method, in form, and in substance. That break was promised from his first day in office. It’s not really delivered on with the list of names given, but he says the difference is that the method won’t be the same. And so they have
France’s new government under Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu contained few surprises when the Élysée unveiled its line-up late on Sunday, with many ministers, like Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau and Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, keeping their posts. Some former ministers are also returning to the cabinet, like Bruno Le Maire who is coming back as defence minister. FRANCE 24’s Antonia Kerrigan takes us through the appointments and what Lecornu’s strategy appears to be.
