ST. JOHNS, Ariz. (KVOA) – The coal power plant near St. Johns is set to transition into a natural gas facility by 2030. This change comes after the Coronado Generating Station was initially planned to retire by 2032, the Arizona Corporation Commission announced.

The Salt River Project (SRP), the power company responsible, announced the conversion to continue serving customers in parts of Pinal, Maricopa and Gila counties.

This decision aligns with the state’s efforts to expand natural gas usage to meet future energy demands.
