Following the first named storm of the season – Storm Amy – people may already be craving some sun and warmer temperatures. And if you’re dreaming about next year’s summer holiday, there will be an array of new destinations to choose from flying direct from Newcastle Airport.

The opening of easyJet’s Newcastle base early next year will see 11 new routes taking off from Newcastle Airport, including Malta, Prague, Reus and Nice. There will also be a further three new holiday destinations on offer as Jet2.com and Jet2holidays expands its summer 2026 programme.

Among those destinations is the Greek island of Meganisi, which can be accessed by flying to Preveza Airport. Weekly Wednesday trips will depart from Newcastle International Airport from May 27 to October 7. Those booking with Jet2holidays to Meganisi will also have ferry and shuttle transfers included.

Meganisi is a tiny Ionian Island located off the coast of Lefkas, however, it’s name actually translates as ‘big island’, as it is the largest of a group of small islands. Meganisi is described as one of Greece’s best kept secrets, but is best known for its natural beauty and character, offering a tranquil feel, and an authentic Greek experience.

The hidden gem is said to be ideal for holidaymakers who want peace, charm and unspoiled scenery. Here are five things you can do on Meganisi, should you choose to go.

Visit Papanikolis Cave

Meganisi boasts natural beauty and stunning surrondings. Tucked away on the eastern coast of the island is Papanikolis Cave, which gets its name from the Greek submarine named “Papanikolis”. Papanikolis Cave became a hide out for the submarine during World War II, allowing it to evade detection.

Today, the cave can still be accessed by boat and many have visited its spacious chamber, which extends deep into the limestone cliffs.

Enjoy an authentic Greek experience

Staying on the island means taking a step away from a typical tourist and businer Greek resorts. But this is exactly why visitors fall in love with Meganisi.

Travelling to this island allows holidaymakers to enjoy a more authentic Greek experience. It gives people the opportunity to appreciate the unspoiled scenery in a more quiet and relaxed setting. Take a walk through the villages on the island and the olive groves which separate them.

Feast on fresh local seafood

Enjoy a meal at one of the restaurants on the island where you can feast on fresh seafood from Vathi – a small fishing village with a harbour.

Soak up the sun on one of the island’s beaches

Although Meganisi is a small island there are several beaches to choose from. Take your pick between sandy shores or pebbly coves and enjoy views of the stunning crystal clear waters.

Fanari Beach appears to be the most popular beach on the island, where sun loungers and parasols can be hired for a small fee. There is also several tavernas and a beach bar where you can enjoy refreshments and a bite to eat.

For a smaller and more peaceful vibe, the white pebbled beach of Limonari is a ‘hidden gem’ surrounded by greenery.

Set sail on crystal-clear waters

Why not take a boat onto the water and explore the island’s hidden bays and neighbouring islands, including Lefkada, which allows holidaymakers to experience a busier resort before returning to a peaceful setting.
