Biofuels are a huge mistake.
A great study. Changed my thinking some.
Biofuels are part of the agricultural-industrial complex.
It’s how it’s produced. Production can require significant amounts of land and water. High pollutant.
it’s not the fuel itself that is to blame for this, it how it’s produced and all the fossil fuels used in that production.
same with hydrogen.
as fuels they are both solid contenders for portable power, but their production needs a major shot of renewables to make it make sense.
instead we let the greenwashing and ag lobby get ahead of us and now we see articles like this.
Having just taught a course on biofuels LCA I can tell you categorically that biofuels have emissions added to their carbon intensity for every gallon and it’s no a one off as claimed in this article
California, with perhaps the strictest Indirect land use change penalty in the world has an average carbon intensity of ethanol around 60 gCO2e/MJ, compared to 100 for gasoline. Renewable diesel comes in lower because of the feedstock mix – coming in at around 40gCO2e/Mj compared to diesel at 105
We do need to address biodiversity, food and fuel/materials land use on a global scale and use land efficiently while protecting wild spaces. converting food to fuel (like soy) increases food prices, I have very good data showing that correlation and it has been somewhat addressed in the IRA regulations though the ILUC component was weakened under Trump. That debate is around social justice, and not around biofuel use per se and I’m well onboard with that argument that we should +never* increase food prices to make fuel.
Whatever the solution is it is definitely not helped by publishing easily debunked articles like this one that confuses carbon ghg calculations with other issues.
what a surprise. no.
