A man has been jailed six months after pleading guilty to using a counterfeit ID card when entering Malta.

Hamza Lamrani, a 30-year-old Moroccan national, arrived in Malta on Thursday on a flight from Istanbul, Turkey at 11:55pm.

The man was stopped at Malta International Airport on suspicion that he was using a counterfeit document purportedly issued from Hungary.

Police inspector Lara Butters told the court that the man said he paid €9,000 which included the document, the flights from Morocco to Turkey to Malta, and also covered accommodation for the days he spent in Istanbul.

On Friday afternoon, Lamrani was accused also of giving false information to the Principal Immigration Officer and of using forged documents.

He admitted the charges brought against him.

After hearing the submissions on punishment, the court jailed him for six months.

Magistrate Victor Axiak presided.

Police inspector Lara Butters prosecuted while legal aid lawyer Rachel Tua appeared for the man.
