Kate Middleton is among the most famous women on the planet, yet despite her royal standing, she once found herself in an amusing case of mistaken identity.

The incident occurred when Kate accompanied her husband, Prince William, during a trip to the Shire Hall Care Home in Cardiff, Wales, back in 2020, where they chatted with elderly residents including the outspoken Joan Drew-Smith, who delivered the comical remark to the royal pair. Joan had previously grabbed attention during her last encounter with the couple, thanks to her brutally honest assessment of their royal bingo abilities, which in Joan’s opinion, left much to be desired.

When being reintroduced to Joan, William said, “Hello Joan, do you remember we did the bingo with you? You said we weren’t very good!” “Yes,” Joan responded frankly. “You did a bloody s—-y job.” Then something hilarious happened.

Throughout their visit, both William and Kate donned face masks due to the early stages of the Covid pandemic, making conversation somewhat difficult. “We have to wear masks because of the virus, but it’s difficult to hear sometimes when you can’t see someone’s mouth,” the Prince explained to Joan. The unflappable senior citizen then gestured at Kate and questioned William, “Is that your assistant?”

However, Kate managed the moment with grace, chuckling and telling William, “Well, I am your assistant.” She continued, “I have been for a long time!” Afterward, William affectionately told care home staff, “I love Joan, she’s brilliant. If only everyone was as honest as her.”

But the amusing incident wasn’t the only case where Kate found herself having to explain who she is. During a visit to Burghead Primary School in Moray, Scotland, in 2023, Kate and William toured the facility, interacted with excited students, and the princess even volunteered to time a bike race between two pupils.

During their interaction with the children, she high-fived one student and remarked, “I really like your school,” before one bold child asked the future Queen, “Who are you?” In a modest and endearing reply, Kate gestured towards her husband and said, “I’m married to William,” deliberately leaving out her numerous royal titles when addressing the young students. Kate’s identity was later questioned by another child at the school, who casually asked her, “Are you a Prince?”

Shaking her head for clarification, Kate humbly responded, “I’m not a Prince. I’m the Duchess of Cambridge. Lots of people call me Catherine.” When another little girl exclaimed, “She’s a Princess!” Kate sweetly asked her, “Are you? Are you a Princess?” When the girl shook her head, Kate replied, “Aww, you look like one in your beautiful pink coat.” She later became Princess of Wales when her father-in-law became king.

The Waleses have been increasingly visible at royal events, including a recent visit to the National Federation of Women’s Institute (WI) on the third anniversary of Queen Elizabeth’s death. The couple made a special trip to Sunningdale to honor the late monarch’s extraordinary life, a location that holds a significant connection to the Queen.

The WI, the UK’s largest women’s organization, provides a safe space for women to engage in various activities, share experiences and collaborate to effect positive change in their local, national and global communities. The late Queen held a deep connection with the organization, having been a member for 80 years since 1943 and serving as President of the Sandringham WI from 2003 until her death in 2022.
