when Israel conquered Palestine in 1948, then arrests anyone who fights back, they’re called “prisoners”.
When Hamas tries to fight back in 2023, and arrests people, they’re called hostages.
What gives? What is the *correct* way to fight a war of resistance against an invader? (Obviously I don’t support the Nova massacre or similar incidents).
I think back to Indonesia which was conquered by the Dutch for 400 years before they had a revolution and ousted the Dutch in the 1950s. In the revolution, they killed 10,000 Dutch civilians. That’s immoral. But what if the Indonesians had taken prisoner (or “hostage”) the civilians instead (which they probably did to some degree actually)? Should the world have condemned that? If so, why?
To me it makes no sense for an invaded population to let civilians of an enemy group just continually produce economic benefits for the invader force. If you’re paying taxes, willingly, into an invasion, you’re clearly helping the invasion. Even unwilling civilian taxpayers should be valid targets for at least imprisonment, no? It does not make sense to just leave civilians completely alone as they pump money and resources into a war machine.
Take another example. In the Ukraine-Russia war, should Ukrainians just continually let Russian civilians pump money and resources into the Russian war machine? I would think it’s relatively moral and ethical to capture Russian civilians so as to stop those civilians from helping the Russian military to kill Ukrainians.
The imprisoned civilians must be treated humanely of course.
To me if we say that civilians are always off limits even from imprisonment, then we’re giving a massive advantage to whatever group is bigger and richer. The richer group will just always outpace the poorer group in economic power infinitely, and thus always have a military advantage over the poorer group too.
Notably CNN is reporting that Israel is refusing to release paediatrician and former head of the Kamal Adwan hospital Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya who is being held under administrative detention.
This is the last footage that has been released of him: https://xcancel.com/hussamabusafiya/status/1892291420561584242?s=46
His lawyers report that his condition is rapidly deteriorating. He was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
In always amazed…hamas will return 20 hostages and gain 250 in exchange. That’s 2.5 palestinians to every 1 Israeli. Often the exchange rates are much much more in favour of palestinians to Israelis. Why dies Israel agree to these terms?
I gotta say theres something sorts distasteful about it literally been written in black and white that x is worth 2 of y.
Here’s a question to really ponder: why is taking hostages illegal under international law?
If the hostages are soldiers and treated with respect and grace, what’s the harm in taking them hostage?
The answer is simple: it creates an incentive for the side had hostages taken from them to seek guarantees that they can afford the next exchange. If the going rate is 1,000 prisoners per hostage, and Hamas can take hostages 20 at a time, then Israel is given a perverse incentive to have enough prisoners on hand to “purchase” the next batch of hostages.
Hostage taking ALWAYS backfires in the long term. That’s why it’s illegal under international law regardless of how the hostages are treated.
I swear, they release actually convicted extremist people vs keeping a moderate politician with no evidence* for his conviction locked up.
Israel would rather reincarnate Hitler from the dead than release marwan barghouti
* no evidence released to the public so its just a trust me bri
