Two Royal Air Force surveillance aircraft flew a 12-hour mission on Thursday 9 October 2025, patrolling NATO’s eastern flank along the Russian border. The operation demonstrated the UK’s operational readiness and NATO’s collective resolve in response to recent incursions into allied airspace.
The RAF RC-135 Rivet Joint and P-8A Poseidon aircraft covered nearly 10,000 miles from the High North past Belarus and Ukraine, collecting intelligence along the route. A U.S. Air Force KC-135 Stratotanker from the 100th Air Refuelling Wing supported the flight, extending the mission’s range and reinforcing trans-Atlantic cooperation.
Always watching.

“This was a substantial joint mission with our U.S. and NATO allies. Not only does this provide valuable intelligence to boost the operational awareness of our Armed Forces, but sends a powerful message of NATO unity to Putin and our adversaries,” said Defence Secretary John Healey.
He added, “I want to thank the outstanding British personnel who carried out and supported this successful mission, alongside our allies. Their tireless work makes Britain safer, secure at home and strong abroad.”
The Rivet Joint aircraft, a core part of the UK’s intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capability, is equipped to intercept a wide range of signals across the electromagnetic spectrum. The P-8A Poseidon, focused on the Baltic Sea, provides maritime patrol and anti-submarine warfare capability, including the use of torpedoes and anti-ship missiles.
“Missions like this demonstrate NATO’s unity and readiness to defend its members against any aggression,” said Group Captain Matthew D’Aubyn, ISTAR Commander. “Our ability to operate seamlessly with USAF assets underscores the strength of the NATO alliance.”
The joint mission, closely coordinated with NATO allies across Europe, contributed to broader situational awareness and deterrence along NATO’s eastern flank. It also aligns with the UK government’s Plan for Change, reinforcing national security and international cooperation.
“The RAF remains committed to working alongside our Allies to ensure the safety and sovereignty of NATO airspace,” added Group Captain D’Aubyn.
