So there is this thing- appliance in my room it's near the window. If I pull the string it expands a little, but I can't understand what it does. Anyone knows?

  1. It is the fresh air vent. Pull it open, and if you feel the air is too cold pull it shut. It is probably a good idea to keep it open a bit at all times, but do whatever suits you.

  2. There used to be a hole in the wall there. They put this plug to fix it. If you want to, you can pull the string to open it up a little again, just for fun, or to get some fresh air, that’s up to you.

  3. Air vent. In winter time it may feel that it should be closed, but don’t! It brings the fresh air in the apartment.

  4. Man I wish this were a common thing in the United States

  5. As people before me have stated,

That is a fresh air intake, please keep it open even tho it lets cold air in.

Cold air is more oxygen rich than warm air and it helps to build up immunity, helps to build immunity against sickness, fights againts mold ETC.

(Fresh cold air is good for babies too.)

If you feel that it still lets too much cold air in, you can just pull that string and it should close, but I recommend keeping it open multiple hours of the day.

Do not keep it closed multiple days in row.

If it doesn’t open and close properly ask your local maintenance worker to fix it.

  6. If you think the air is too cold close it despite people trying you to convince to do otherwise. You pay for the apartment and ultimately you decide what’s best for you. You can get fresh air in by opening windows for a few minutes (venting) occasionally (when you feel the need), no need to have continuous draft.

It’s known that especially for women the common indoor temperature recommendations are often too low. You don’t have to suffer in your own home. The studies concern mostly work places but the same applies of course in home. And it’s not male-female thing, of course anything from metabolism and body size could affect it.

For some people feeling fresh cool air might feel better but others might not agree. There’s no absolute truth in this issue, there’s just lot of strong opinions from people who think they know what you need better than you.

Indoor air temperature recommendations are just recommendations but some believe they’re rules what everyone has to follow.

“Naisille sopiva lämpötila on noin 0,5–3 astetta korkeampi kuin miehille.” (For females the suitable temperature is 0,5-3 degrees higher than for men.”

“– Esimerkiksi 19–22 asteessa naiset kokevat lämpötilan viileämmäksi kuin miehet.” (E.g. in 19-22 degrees female experience the temperature lower than men.)
