  1. Absolute scum.

    >Coillte said that it was approached by an unnamed group seeking to use a pathway through the Coillte land to carry out the felling….. The report said the group behind the felling still continued to use the Coillte plantation to move their machinery onto the site for the allegedly illegal works, noting that the forestry body was “not aware” of this.

Sounds like it was whoever owned the land that illegally felled the trees. But we don’t punish people in Ireland, so they’ll get a slap on the wrist and will go about their business.

  2. Open to correction, but modern forestry machinery in Ireland are only capable of harvesting evergreen trees and wouldn’t be able to fell mature hardwood trees? These trees would have to have been felled by chainsaw as the trunk would be too big for the harvester?

  3. >Photos of the site, included in the report seen by *The Journal*, show bare parcels of land after the trees and plants were allegedly cleared away.

Can I see them please and also have the location ?

  4. Probably Coillte themselves so they could plant more Sitka Spruce ha.

  5. Fine will still be a lot cheaper than the profit made. Need tougher fines for this.

  6. We need to make a big example of the people who did this. Big fines and long jail terms for all involved

  7. No mention of the Gardaí getting involved. Crime committed? Call Gardaí.

  8. Someone will know who did this and they are on r/Ireland. Name and shame please

  9. Thirty acres. ***Thirty.***

I am not a violent person but I must admit, knowing that the courts won’t give a shit and that the gardaí are useless, the first thing that popped into my head was vigilantism.

  10. I don’t believe this could be done without the collusion of staff from Coillte.

At least Manchán Magan wasn’t alive to see this.

  11. Coillte know who this is. Why didn’t coillte notify NPWS when the first application to use their land was submitted? And this “unnamed” group still used coillte land access? How did they get keys for barriers, how did they get machinery through without help or assistance?

  12. How did it go on for weeks and no one put a stop to it? Absolute disgrace and the most they’ll get is probably a €1,000 fine.

  13. Cost of doing business. They will have planned out what the paltry fine will be and know it will be easily covered by whatever money they make.

  14. I know there was some dodgy destruction of forests in millstreet recently. Illegal fires and those trees were on a hill and the houses at the bottom are getting flooded (just gardens so far) – wouldn’t be surprised if this is related.

  15. I’m just.. Why really why

Is their something in humans that’s just wrong

Why this, Ireland already has so little left of its ecosystems

  16. That would have taken days and made a hell of a lot of noise. How come they went caught in the act.

What the fuck is going in with our environmental protection. 50k fish killed on a river. They suffered before they died. Nothing to see here. Days of machinery and chain saws. Trucks taking away the felled trees. Nobody stopped it happening.

  17. And not a minute in prison will be served by any of those responsible.

  18. I think in Greece they have a law, that of your forest gets burned down due to someone setting fire you are not allowed to use the land for 15 years, basically giving the land/trees time to regrow.

Something like that would be much more *educational* than a small fine…..

  19. My god, what is going on?!! It wasn’t enough to wipe out over 40,000 fish in the Blackwater…this is utterly depressing. Two eco systems completely wiped out. You don’t just fell 30 acres overnight, someone in Coillte has to know what’s going on. Just like someone has to know who dumped a load of chemicals into the river.

  20. Someone thinks they had the privilege to do this. So sad.

  21. This is sad.

And of course they knew what was going on. It’s not like it could have been done in few days. It obviously took a week at least if not more. With lots of noise, lots of machinery, lots of people. And somehow they were not aware??

  22. Too many people, including people working for relevant state bodies, had to know of this before it happened and during the task.

    An absolute disgrace

  23. Some standard of journalism there. Doesn’t even tell us where in Co Cork it happened.

The Journal saw the photo’s but they don’t even put them in the article.

    Laughable really.

  24. How the f#*k did they manage to destroy an area so big before they were caught….Totally stinks, awful awful news ffs 🤬😡😡

  25. Whereabouts did this happen? It says Cork but doesn’t mention the area

  26. 3 sea eagles killed by wind turbines. The fish kill in the river. Now this forest wiped out. It’s absolutely heartbreaking lads. I really fear the future.

  27. “Depending on the result of this investigation, legal action may be considered.”

    Yeah, this isn’t going anywhere.

  28. Apparently, Coillte were contacted in advance of the felling with a request for permission to move heavy machinery through their land to carry out the felling. How the fook did these bastards get away with felling THIRTY ACRES of native woodland? I am livid after hearing about this. These bastards need to spend serious time in jail.

  29. About a kilometre of roadside trees felled on the lisgoold to Midleton road, shit job and road will be more dangerous for it in years to come.
