The current Moldovan authorities are making a serious mistake by turning Russia into their enemy in order to build relations with Europe, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

His comment came after Chisinau adopted a new military strategy this week, which lists Russia as a threat, according to the Russian state news agency Tass.

“This is a continuation of a rather confrontational line towards our country, a hostile line. From our point of view, the current leaders of Moldova are making a serious mistake,” Peskov said.

According to him, the Moldovan authorities believe that the path to Europe necessarily includes a conflict with Moscow.

“They believe that the line of building relations with Europe implies complete antagonizing Russia. One country has already made such a mistake. It did not bring anything good to that one country,” the Kremlin spokesman emphasized, as reported by Index.

Defeat of pro-Russian parties in Moldova

Moldova’s ruling pro-European party won a landslide victory in parliamentary elections in late September, leaving behind the pro-Russian opposition with 50,2 percent of the vote compared to 24,2 percent.

The leaders of France, Germany and Poland issued a joint statement congratulating Moldova on “the peaceful conduct of the elections, despite unprecedented Russian interference, including vote buying and disinformation.”

Moscow rejects these claims and accuses Moldovan authorities of preventing hundreds of thousands of its citizens with addresses in Russia from voting by providing only two polling stations.
