Egypt opens Amenhotep III’s tomb to public, after over 20 years of renovation • FRANCE 24 English

The final resting place of Arman Hotep the Great, a pharaoh whose rule started 3,414 years ago, open to the public for the first time in two decades. The tomb of King Amu III was discovered in 1799 and then it was rediscovered again in 1915 by Hard Carter. Uh the tomb uh of course was unfortunately discovered uh completely uh empty. So it was stolen before only the lid of the sarcophagus uh is still there and it was broken into several pieces more than 200 pieces. A 36 m passage under the valley of the kings leads to the main burial chamber along with two other areas for the ruler’s wives. The paintings show the pharaoh with ancient Egyptian gods along with inscriptions from the book of the dead, an ancient text that aims to direct the departed through the underworld. The rehabilitation efforts have been a Japanese-led three-phaseed process and included restoration of paintings on the tomb walls. So um 260 representatives over the 20 years, researchers, specialized conservation, super skilled techniques technicians. So I think this is a very big achievement. The reopening is part of wider efforts to attract more foreign visitors. Tourism has long been a major source of revenue for the government, but has never fully recovered from the political crisis and violence that followed the 2011 uprising.

Egypt on Saturday (October 4) opened a tomb of a pharaoh for visitors after more than two decades of renovation in the southern city of Luxor, as it prepares for the official opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum in Cairo.

  10. Very cool how they've restored the paintings. Unfortunately, I've seen multiple vloggers complain about how Egypt is one of the most difficult countries to visit. Officials requiring bribes and aggressive vendors can make travel uneasy. The government needs to work on this.
