  1. What is holding Norwegians back from joining the EU?

  2. With Trump’s trade war against EU and other countries (including Norway) and at the same time Russia’s provocations against Svalbard archipelago there is an increased percentage of Norwegians who start reconsidered their relations with European Union

  3. With the state of Germany and France, which are the EUs core, it’s surprising that the sentiment is rising.

  4. That is a cherry picked survey from March this year.

Support for membership have since dropped again.

  5. Shouldn’t do it. They are better with the current system.

  6. Seeing how nationalism is on the rise, even a slight majority in favour of EC ascession would probably not be a solid ground to start talks. The EU should focus on consolidation right now rather than expansion.

  7. Glad to see, but can we please ensure that this is a clear vote. For example, require an 66% majority before decisions are made? Not like with Brexit.

  8. And they say Trump’s presidency have achieved nothing good.

  9. Terrible idea. They’ll make Norway spend their wealth fund on bailing out France.

  10. Are they not aware of the state of the EU? I know their state TV is very one sided but they all have phones.

  11. As a Norwegian, I wonder where they get these numbers from. In my opinion they are not representative, at all.

  12. Norway and Switzerland must join EU, there’s no other way. Why such resistance? Our russian-backed separatist region of Transnistria has more pro-EU voters I think 😁

  13. This sub is so hellbent on the narrative that Norway is on the «verge of joining EU at any moment» and that there are «absolutely no downsides for Norway to join and they should just do it already». Just stop.

When it’s actually up for debate and a hot topic in Norwegian politics, we’ll tell you.

  14. Norway can have migrants or asylum seekers like other EU nations

  15. I don’t understand why they want to be in the EU. They have an amazing deal with the EU which gives them several benefits of being in it without being in it.

  16. idk if thats a good idea given that france is nearing bankruptcy

  17. It’ll cost Norway to join. They’ll be expected to share their wealth. Their fishing territory will be the first thing to go.

  18. Russia is a miracle worker here and Trump also. Many Norwegians start to understand that the more united Europe is economically the better.

Not to mention the fact that UK Brexit is not going well also.

  19. Why are the same accounts always posting the same pro eu / pro federation stuff with questionable sources?

It’s almost like it’s organized, very strange

It’s like an influencing campaign but for something people don’t particularly care strongly for or against

  20. Alternative and more realistic: Norwerian still not supporting for joining EU, support for joining still gaining momentum.

  21. Even if polls get past the 50% approval mark, they shouldn’t think of holding talks with the EU.

EU membership should be subject to having a super majority in a confirmatory referendum, rather than a simple majority that can easily swing back to negative opinion.

  22. As long as the ‘Yes’ campaign is so poorly run, it would probably take something extraordinary to get Norway to join the EU. The disintegration of NATO would probably strengthen the ‘Yes’ campaign.

Still, I think we would need a stable majority for ‘Yes’ if we were ever to start negotiations with the EU over membership. It would be rather silly to go through all the process for a third time, only for ‘No’ to win again.

Fishing and agriculture would probably, as with the two other referendums, be the major stumbling blocks. I think a negotiated deal that includes the Common Fisheries Policy would be dead in the water. As for agriculture, that would need some delicate work to ensure that our small farms do not all perish, as that would be very bad for rural Norway.

In 1972 and 1994, ‘Yes’ was defeated by an alliance of ‘No’ voters in the rural parts of the country, and the Norwegian Left. I think that is still the basis of the Norwegian ‘No’ movement, and it would take some persuasion to turn that around.

Finally, it should be noted that the EEA has served us very well. We are also a member of Schengen, and countless other EU bodies, so the integration into full membership should not pose major difficulties.

  23. As much as I want to see the EU grow, the EU needs to solve the Hungary problem before we can let more countries in

  24. What’s the deal with this sub man, norway is not going to join the EU any time soon unless we get an opt-out on the fishery policy, it’s simply too important for us.

Am i crazy for thinking it’s propoganda when people/bots say “there are NO downsides at all for norway to join!” When there’s several issues like for our farmers would not be able to compete with EU marked and our waters would be drained completely by other countries.

  25. PRO: You are part of a superpower on many fields

    CON: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAND ITS GOOOONE!!!

Jokes beside: Everything becomes better when youre a receiver…. and youll for sure realize a change when you are so rich to be a giver. But youre part of something great and big. It has many problemes and its not perfect but you cannot be bullied around by todays world leaders anymore.

  26. Other than petrol hoarding why isn’t Norway in the Union?

  27. I understand not joining EU if people like von der leyen can become the president, and the biggest problem is about vegan burgers, EU needs to be reformed.

  28. Stay out, make trade deals but don’t join this bandwagon before it is seriously reformed.
