Conkers is in line for a second royal seal of approval after using the King’s chestnuts – as Prince Louis has been asked to become honorary patron of the World Conker Championships.

Organisers, who used 300 nuts sent from Windsor Castle in Sunday’s 256-player tournament at Southwick, Northants, are waiting to hear a response from the Prince and Princess of Wales.

They wrote to Wills and Kate two weeks ago, requesting Louis be made their honorary patron.

His mother Kate, joint president of the Scouts and herself a big nature admirer who encourages her children to take a big interest in the great outdoors, said of Louis’ passion: “We keep finding conkers in cupboards, in his bed – conkers everywhere.

“He even puts the conkers in his toy trucks and plays with them.”

St John Burkett, spokesperson for the World Conker Championships, said: “We are excitedly awaiting the response to our letter of September 26 to the Prince and Princess of Wales, requesting Prince Louis be appointed our honorary patron.

“Like the many other organisations for which members of the Royal family are patrons, we have charitable aims and have raised approaching £450,000 to help people living with sight loss.

“We were so heartened to hear that Prince Louis is such a conkers fan and he would be the perfect honorary patron for our organisation.

“We would be delighted were his parents to accept our offer.

“The Princess of Wales herself is such a wonderful champion of childhood and nature, and playing conkers connects both children and adults to nature.

“Prince Louis, and any other members of the Royal Family, would of course be most welcome to compete in future World Conker Championships.”
