In what many people thought would be a comfortable victory for the France U-21s. The men in blue did not disappoint as they put six goals past a deflated Estonia side.
With the whole game being dominated by France as they showed the large gap in quality between the two sides.
France made a great start to the game finding a quick two goal lead through Mathys Tel and Djaoui Cisse.
But the French youngsters then went on to squander many glorious chances which would have won them the game early on with Estonia struggling to maintain any form of possession let alone create any chances.
But France were unable to find a third goal and this allowed Estonia to half the deficit on the stroke of half time.
This did not deter the French side as they upped their levels in the second half and scored a further four goals to finish the game with a six goals to one victory.
Story of the game
The first 10 minutes of the game were dominated by France as they looked to set the tone of the game from the opening whistle.
But despite the early possession they were unable to create any chances.
This was until Estonia made a mistake at the back as Ott Nomm’s pass was intercepted by, Tottenham Hotspur winger, Wilson Odobert who then unselfishly played the ball across to Mathys Tel, his club level teammate, who slotted the ball past the Estonian goalkeeper to give his side an early lead.
From the Estonia restart France once again put the pressure on the away side as they won back possession almost instantly. But nothing came from this as Estonia defended Odobert’s resulting cross to keep the game at a one goal advantage for the home side.
Shortly after on the 12th minute France doubled their advantage through yet another Estonia mistake at the back as they failed to deal with the France press. With Ayyoub Bouaddi intercepting the ball and laying it off to Tel who in turn laid the ball back to Cisse. The Rennes midfielder took his effort from the edge of the 18 yard box and gave his country a two goal lead.
For the remainder of the second half it was all France pressure with wave after wave of attacks as they looked for their third goal of the match.
However, this third goal never came as Nomm made good saves to keep his side in the game but France also squandered chances as both Odobert and Cisse missed big chances that they sent over the crossbar which both players will be disappointed with not scoring them.
Especially the Tottenham man as he fluffed his lines on two separate occasions which on another day he would probably be scoring.
Failing to capitalise on their sustained pressure, Estonia managed to half the deficit as they grabbed a goal back on the stroke of half time. As Warren Zaire-Emery played the ball back to goalkeeper, Robin Risser. Risser tried to take the ball past the Estonian striker, Tony Varjund, but he was dispossed allowing Varjund to slot the ball into an empty net.
Gerald Baticle, the France U-21 manager, went on to make two half time substitutions as he brought on Eli Junior Kroupi for Jean Bahoya and Jeremy Jacquet for Leny Yoro.
With Kroupi going on to make an instant impact as he saw an early second half chance dragged wide but then four minutes later Kroupi grabbed his first goal of the game restoring his sides two goal advantage.
As the Bournemouth man made a run in behind the Estonia defence and was picked out by, Champions League winner, Zaire-Emery with a wonderful pass. Kroupi then chipped the ball over the Estonian goalkeeper into the bottom left corner.
Odobert began to dominate the game as he saw his effort from a corner clip the outside of the post from the edge of the penalty area.
Not long after on the 64th minute Odobert was finally able to grab his well deserved goal. To give France a three goal advantage as the score line read four goals to one in France’s favour. This goal came from good play down the left hand side through Tel and Metholdie with the latter playing a delightful ball across the six yard box which Odobert tapped home from close range.
Despite the game being comfortable for France they almost made another crucial mistake as Risser again lost possession of the ball as his sloppy pass was intercepted. However, Estonia couldn’t capitalise on this as their shot went sailing over the crossbar to spare Risser’s blushes.
As the game was nearing its conclusion France showed no signs of slowing down as they kept pushing for more goals.
Which came on the 79th and 86th minutes respectively. As both Odobert and Kroupi picked up their second goals of the game.
With the Tottenham man scoring a half volley from just inside the 18 yard box and Kroupi scoring a close range rebound from an Odobert header that hit the post.
Giving the hosts a comfortable six goals to one win over a deflated Estonia team who didn’t have the necessary quality to stop the France attack.
The hosts kept their perfect start to the under-21 Euro qualication stage alive as that is now two wins in two games for the French side. Putting them just three points behind Faroe Islands despite playing two fewer games than the team in the top spot.
Estonia however are now winless in five qualification games.
